Just won this coin - I don't know it's value as it's too hard to find the info anywhere on the web and I only have a Krause for 1901-2000.

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI....WN:IT&ih=014

Lepton of the Ionian islands (under British rule) 1862

I know these are pretty rare but can someone tell me the values for the grades of this date? If there is a web resource for them then that would be even better :)

Thanks in advance,
Matt

Hmm I expected the values to be higher - I have seen these go astronomically high on ebay in low grades. I wonder where they got this eyebrow-raising figure from..

Don't worry about the value on this one. The various dates for this type are more or less the same values. I've sold several of this type in equal or worse grade anywhere from $20 to $25. ebay is funny like that.

Yes. I have had many problems selling world coins on ebay- they just dont go. Just a few months ago I offered an Unc Prussian 3 Marks (BIG silver coin) valued at $85. I started it at $0.99 and there were no bids when it ended! People cant even reach into their pockets for a $1 bill even when $85 was marked directly on the 2x2...

Gosh! it's funny no-one bidded really

It should have been me ;) ...

But yes, I understand bout the strangeness of " ebay" and the way it doesn't sell quality items but does sell things that seem to stand out a bit more. Maybe there is a lesson in this in advertising coins in a particular way? Whatever that is, I still don't get it, or I'd be rich pretty soon...

I know... I dont know what I'd do if someone won it for $1.

So sending the coin is out of the question then?

Pattiewhack, I'm sorry but I do not believe your story about the 3 mark coin. Was there a reserve?
I've been around ebay for too long to believe that no one would place a bid on something like that unless there was a reserve or it was listed in the wrong category. I look at these coins every single day, so believe me if it was in the world coins category I'd have seen it and bid on it.

Really? You are calling him a liar because you claim to have seen every single coin offered on ebay.

If I still had a link to the auction I'd be glad to show it to you Numismat. It was August when I listed it so the page is long gone- I still have the coin though. There was no reserve, it was $0.99, and it was in the right category.
Im not asking people to believe me, nor do I want to start an argument. I'm simply telling it like it happened. There are so many world coins selling on ebay at any one time it would be very, very difficult for one person to see each and every one at all moments, and I therefore cannot see a basis for your argument.

It might be a good reason to make a couple dozen 'low bids' near the start price every now and then - never know when you might win the lottery ;)

That one is a pretty nice grade, and the patina is good. Most of the ones I've seen have been either very dark or much more worn. What's this one an EF?

Pattie- Sorry to have offended you. I've become a bit cynical over the years and I keep thinking that something must have been wrong, maybe the pictures made it look like a replica or people felt that way? When I say I look at all these I really do, as far as German states coins and certain other types are concerned. I bargain hunt for the lower priced ones every single day. I wish I had seen that one! =)
