Ok so I noticed on this coin that the edge has a pattern on it. What does that mean? if anything....

Does it mean its a proof? Or is it on all of these coins.

Also what would this coin grade?

Nope, that's the normal edge of the 1 mark.

Ja, as Sap says, the Randschrift is on all Bundesrepublik 1 Mark. The coin would probably grade VF.

The coin was actually the first years minting of 1 Marks since 1939 (1 Reichsmark back then), was minted at Karlsruhe-G and is 1 of 39,825,826 coins. Karlsruhe minted the smallest quantities of the Four Bundesrepublik mints (the other three all minted in excess of 60 Million). Total 1950 Minting: 231,959,171.

1950 was the first year that West German coins bore the legend 'Bundesrepublik Deutschland'; it replaced the legend 'Bank Deutcher Laender' used on coinage since the Currency reform of 1948.

Veeery strictly speaking I would not call this a Randschrift as it has not text elements. These are called arabesques.

The "Bank deutscher Länder" inscription is only used on the last coins issued in the German Reich under allied occupation (Western zones). When the Federal Republic was founded in 1949, the newly issued pieces (1950-) said Bundesrepublik Deutschland instead. The first 2 DM coins, issued in 1951, look pretty much like the 1 DM pieces but have actual text on the edge.

I just moved to the US from Germany and am now curious to look at my Deutsche Mark to inspect the Randschrift etc. Thanks for the info!

Are there any interesting German coins out now?

Hehe, the DM was replaced by the euro (as a currency) in 1999 or (in terms of cash) in 2002, and I have not seen any of those 1 DM coins here for quite a while ... except in my collection. Now what would you call interesting? Tomorrow, for example, a new issue in the "State Twoers" series comes out, a €2 commem dedicated to the state of Hamburg. (Previous ones featured SH and MV.) On the same day, the new €2 commem from Luxembourg will be available.

And if you still have an address in the EU, you can vote for next year's common €2 issue here: http://www.eurodesigncontest.eu/ Well, the five designs are somewhat bland and plain in my opinion ...

Christian, I was only at home in Germany for 3 years before the Euro appeared. I have the 2 euro from Lubeck, and the Finnland 2 Euro for 2007, but then, moved over here. What other 2 Eruo coins were minted in 2007?

Quite a few ... and if nobody else minds, let's hijack this discussion. As for the 2007 issues, here is an overview, from the European Commission's website: http://ec.europa.eu/economy_finance...s7458_en.htm

The first image represents the 13 Treaty of Rome issues; the different country specific versions can be viewed here http://ec.europa.eu/economy_finance...s7460_en.htm (scroll down a little). The €2 commems from the three non-EU countries (Monaco, San Marino, Vatican) are not really made for circulation and cannot be had at face value.

The ECB has a similar list here:

Thanks, Christian! That was most useful and helpful. I love the Portugal coin!

I must try to get ahold of this coin! Thanks, and keep me posted for interesting coins.
