Hopefully this is in the right section..
First of all, I'm really excited to be a part of this forum. I've just recently gotten into collecting coins, and I love it :)

So this is a coin I recently bought, and I'm wondering what people's thoughts are on the toning. I've been trying to read up on how to spot AT...it seems to be pretty difficult. This coin does seem to display elevation chromatics and *maybe* a bit of pullaway, but I don't like how the obv. and rev. have very similar colors...I know that's rare. But I thought I'd take the risk. If the consensus is that it's AT, I think I'll probably return it.
Thanks!

Definite artificial toning and probably used to cover up a crappy cleaning job,

There is a slight amount of radial mint luster left, but
toning like this, if done very carefully, can be achieved by light heat.

Actually I still think that is still a rather nice coin, and could attract a few buyers at a lower price.

If that toning were only on one side I'd lean towards Natural Toning.
But both sides!?
I'll go with Artificial Toning.

Another thing I was wondering, actually, is that it seems like this kind of toning is mostly seen on higher grade coins (64+). Does this even occur on circulated coins?

Toning can happen at any grade level....on the lower grades it looks unnatural and can be the result of cleaning or improper storage.

This is a Seated dime I purchased several years ago. It was cleaned and retoned.

One thing to look at for toning is how the colors transition. If the colors change abruptly, like your coin does, it is most likely artificial.

Learning to tell artificial toning is getting harder these days. But the best resource I ever had on this subject came from Robert "Bob" Campbell's ANA Summer Seminar bull session about it. There is a video of his presentation available through CoinTV David Lisot's company in Texas.

How to Detect Artificial Toning

The coin doctors are hard at work to deceive you with beautifully colored coins. Learn all about toning from Robert Campbell, ANA authenticator and Regional Coordinator. He explains what toning is and how to tell natural from artificial. Lecture with slides.

So many coins were dipped in the 1960-1980's as white coins seemed to bring better money, it's almost hard to believe that many of them are original today, many have since re-toned naturally (alibit, processed though storage methods) but not in a malicious way, so they may indeed be okay at a TPG.

The best advice I can tell you from Bob's talk is to look for a rainbow spectrum spread, that is the colors must follow the order of a rainbow, from deep purple/violet, through to the reds, any variation in this is most certainly artificially done. Also look for the way the toning flows over higher parts of the coin, broken areas, and weird color patterns.

This article (while lengthy) is a pretty start.

I really recommend you order the DVD from David, it is worth every penny, and could potentially save you from making big money mistakes down the road, if you are into buying toned coins.
