I saw this 1858 Flying Eagle graded AU-53 by NGC. To me it looks like there's too much wear to the breast and wing feathers to merit an AU-53. What do folks think? Thanks for continuing to help me learn the fine art of grading. Paul Bulgerin

Pass by a long shot. There are nicer in EF holders.

Boy, it sure doesn't look AU-53 to me - more like EF-40 tops.

I'd be in the low EF range with a weak strike to boot.

I'd say this misses the 50 mark, so is certainly below that.

I would have guessed XF40 based on the images. There must be some luster we're not seeing?

I don't think I've ever seen NGC miss the mark by that much on a circulated coin.

It's a real puzzler, especially with the obverse stain. This baby may find a comfortable home, but not with anyone who knows anything about grading IHC.

We'll guys I noticed something with these FEC a while back after I had purchased my first one .. You can look at several of these in the top 4 company's slabs and you will notice their is just no consistently at all ... You will see PCGS EF 40 coins that will look just like the VF25 listed right below it !! Since I've started purchasing a larger varity of coins I've realize there are certain series that even PCGS and NGC seem to be all over the place with their grading ...

This is why you buy the coin, not the slab.
This is what happens when your BAC goes over 0.08 on a friday night, after a long night of grading coins.

It is overgraded. EF40 looks about right. There is always the temptation for TPG's to overgrade to attract business. That is why the seller is getting rid of it in this grade; better hopes of it being sold at AU53 and thus a higher price. It also explains why if a coin comes back from a TPG and the grade is assessed being too low by the owner, that consideration is given for resubmission to another TPG, hopefully for a higher grade. Perhaps such a resubmission was successful, and an attempt is now being made to sell it. Unless you are selling via ebay, you are better of learning to grade accurately for yourself. That is one of the main reasons why TPG's exist. The membership here in the CCF is always ready, and happy to help you, if you are thinking to buy a slabbed coin.

Thanks for all the responses.
It's good to see that my grading suspicions on this Flying Eagle were correct.

I would have to agree, EF-45 at best.
