My grandmother spent the first 80 years of her life with the Anglican Church of Canada and than started going to the Salvation Army and working the kettle every year.

When my good friend had his trailer go up in flames the Salvation Army was right there for him.

You hear about this every year but first time this has happened in Genesse county in 15 years. I believe last year we had a thread talking about whether or not it would be easier to just give them the actual value of the gold.

Happens every year all across the country with people dropping Krugerrands in the buckets... Just curious on how the Salvation Army cashes them in... I would imagine they sell them but how?

I can't tell you how happy this makes me. The Salvation Army is the most humble organization that I know of. We regularly give to World Vison (child sponsorship), Samaritan's Purse, and Voice of the Martyrs. We always put money in the Salvation Army kettles every year- always look forward to it.
Rest in Peace

Typically coins are counted with machine counting at the county level, although some larger metropolitan areas may have several "counting stations" in a single city.

SA is smart. If coins kick out of the machines all such coins are collected and examined for silver or collector value. Usually the time to do so is donated by a local coin store, or in a few cases I know of, by the guy that teaches the coin collecting merit badges for the Boy Scouts.

In any event, I know no one gets to "skim" silver out of the SA barrels. If you give to the SA, they really do make the best possible use of every donation.
Rest in Peace

Someone has done the same for 15 years running around here.
They sell it to a local shop that gives them spot plus a donation on top, usually $100.

I guess I didn't read close enough. It was only 5 years and wrapped in a hundred.

I also am a big fan of the Salvation Army's work. I have been dropping $2 bills in them every time I see the red buckets.

Not being an american it took me a while to understand this thread and what the Salvation Army is. Now aware of the background, I can only applaud the generosity of the person who did this. There is so much misery and need among our fellow human beings - anything and everything that can be done to alleviate some of that is welcome. My wife and I contribute also in our own way over here.
