I have had this coin for ages, got if from my granddad, but never knew where it is from or how old it is. I showed it to a museum employee once and he said it could be Persian.

Any help to identify this coin is greatly appreciated!

This is an early 4th century BC Indian Punch mark coin. I'll see if I can pick it down a little better for you and post what I find.

The coin is most likely from the Mauryan empire and is a copper unit. The three circles with the line through them are usually and indication that the coin came from Taxila. Here is a web site that will help you to understand these coins.

Ujjain copper issue, I believe. "Bale mark" and Ujjain symbol punches visible at left.

Thank you very much for the help! I know now in which direction to search further.

Interestingly, most of the symbols on the coin can be found on reference sites, but the symbol on the left view on the bottom (a circle with some kind of wings beneath it) does not appear anywhere else. Anybody knows what it is?

That's a Ujjain symbol. For similar see this page, especially the third one down:

There is a very interesting book by John Allan about Indian Punched Marked coins in PDF. You can download a copy here.
