Hello to all:

I am going back and forth on this one. The coin is graded PCGS XF40. I like the coin, but I think it may have been re-toned. Do these surfaces seem natural? Comments would be much appreciated. Thanks!

I do not believe this coin is "artificially toned", however...there is a good chance (due to the age of the coin) that it was cleaned some time ago & has since "retoned", albeit naturally. So artificial, no. Retoned, yes.

Definitely naturally toned. But see the thinker patina around the devices? That means it was cleaned at one point. It has since naturally retoned (and maybe circulated a little bit), which is why it received a problem-free grade. I think the half is spot-on at EF-40.

No way is that an AT. That's a great circulation cameo, I love that look.

Cleaned and been around other coins or open to air, and has gained normal color back...

Nice piece.

Appears to have most of it's a original patina and should grade problem-free.

I feel like the obverse and reverse chatter possibly could have made the coin details.

I disagree. I think it would need more/deeper marks to grade details.

I agree Numisma. If anything I think this coin is a good canidate for resubmission. This coin was lowballed in spite of minor field issues. The detail is terrific, shield is full, prominent facial features & just a trace amount of rub on the knee & right wing.

Hold on, the coin did receive a numeric grade from PCGS.

Most likely cleaned a long time ago, but it has retoned nicely. Nice coin!

I am glad this coin received such great reviews, I like it myself, and will probably purchase it (depending on $).

I am wary of PCGS on the subject of cleaning, as I was recently burned on a coin that had been dipped, and did not cross to NGC. I learned that PCGS may overlook dipping, while NGC does not. When I read their grading standards, this seems to be the case. Live and learn I guess. Just about every thread I have read indicated that PCGS exercises stricter standards. I don't have enough experience to make such a judgement, but it was not true in this case.

Anyway, thank you for the responses. I do like this coin!
