Well I asked for a box of nickels today. They gave me loose rolls. 38 were CWR and the other 12 were n.f. string and son. I still count it as 1 box so I can keep my stats easy...

Box #33: 1 silver, 1 hole filler

1940
1945 P silver
1946
1947 d
1947 s
1948
1951
1953 s hole filler
1954 d (x2)
1955 d
1957 d (x2)
1958 d
1959 d

2009 d (x7)

Other:
1982 Canada
2004 d Roosevelt dime
1999 d Lincoln Cent
3 rolls of 2011 d Jefferson nickels (n.f. string wrapped)

The fed rolls gave me the hole filler and the customer rolls gave me the silver. Finally!. It's been 7 boxes since I had a silver nickel. And it's also been 7 boxes since I had a hole filler. What a relief. 5 more holes to fill. And that was also the last s mint nickel I needed!

Here are the remaining 5. The first 3 are obvious, because they are hard for almost everyone. The silver one should be pretty easy to get eventually. and the 1955 is tough but I should also be able to get it soon enough. No telling how long it will be till I get the hard 3.

1950 d (2.6 million)
1939 d (3.5 million)
1938 d (5.4 million)
1955 (8.3 million)
1942 p (57.9 million) silver

I've probably hit 100 boxes over the past 2 or 3 years, still looking for the 39d and 50d. those are the only ones I need. my area feels like it's completely picked over. my brother is going to new mexico in a couple weeks, i'll have him bring me a box.

I don't post my searching results often, but I just finished a pretty epic box of nickels. The finds?

1983-P with Cud - a small Cud, but my first from roll hunting
1950 - hole filler
1944-D - silver and hole filler
1944-S - silver and hole filler
1921-S Buffalo with full date

The Cud is nice, but holy cow you found a 1921 s buffalo! Hard enough to find buffalos with dates these days, but especially a key date. Nice.

And good job on the hole fillers, how many more holes do you have to fill?

Just six holes now - '38-S, '39-D, '43-D, '44-P, '45-D and '50-D. Other than the first few boxes after I started my book, I've never gotten more than one hole-filler in one box, so three at once is amazing. My '38-D came in my very first box of nickels. I have a nice '50-D, but it doesn't count cause I got it at a pawn shop, and I want to fill the book from circulation.

The majority of Buffaloes I find have dates, but almost half the Buffaloes I find are 1936. Since I've started searching I've also found '35 and '34 with full dates and '25, '23, '20, '19 and '18 with varying degrees of partial dates. This is the first I've found with a mint-mark, and it's a whopper for sure.

The picture makes the Cud nickel look better than it is. It's a pretty ugly, beat-up nickel, and it's from the 80s, so it probably didn't look that good when it was new.

Cool man. How many boxes have you gone through? Me and rachums have 5 holes left. I've done 33 boxes and he's done 34. So you've done maybe 30? Just a guess of course. But yeah I usually fill one hole at a time. When I had 11 holes left I got a box that filled 3 holes. it was a shock.

Nice score on the 38 d in your first box. that's a tough one.

Good guess! I'll be picking up #30 in the morning. Actually, it's a bit more than that because I've picked up various amounts of loose rolls (Brinks or customer-wrapped) when a box wasn't available. That adds up to roughly two additional boxes. I do two boxes of nickels and two boxes of dimes most weeks. Sometimes they screw up my change order and I do less. I do halves when I can get them. I've got one branch that gets me a box most weeks now, but not much comes of them.

Nice, I try to do two boxes of dimes and nickels a week. The only thing that stops me is school and work if I get too much of an overload. Cause school takes priority even though i'd hate to admit it. lol. I enjoy searching for silver a lot, it is a cool feeling. But silver is not as good of a feeling as filling one of the holes in my jefferson collection :) It will be so awesome when I complete it.

I realize this is a nickel thread but how are dimes for searching? Never have searched. Only nickels and a few boxes of halves.

Dimes are OK. I think most people find about 1 silver per box, and you can find Mercury dimes now and then, and rarely a barber. People also look for the 1996-W and 1982 no P, though both are quite rare finds. There is a big dime searching thread around here somewhere...
