It's like a Rorshock(sp?) test. You see in it what you want to see in it.

Box #39 down no silver-that's 39/31 or 31 silver no proofs no buffs no V's foreign- 2 Pre-1982 Canadians-1973 and 1980 Dates: 1942 CuNi, 1948-S plus a WWJ nickel that is AMAZINGLY bright and shiny and looks proof-like. it blinds me to look at it at the right angle under the light. Somehow I don't think its MS quality. Almost looks plated or something. til next time

Does that war nick look like this? I think somebody polished them up for some sort of kind of crappy collector set. Still, it's perfectly good junk silver.

A lot of war nickles were chrome plated too. I had a few in set as I waited to pull replacements from circulation

I find a lot of westward journey nickels that are semi-prooflike, particularly 2005-D.

Chrome plating a silver coin...lol Is like the Olympic runner who was so proud of the gold medal he won...he went out and had it bronzed...

The GOOD, the BAD, and the UGLY! Here it is, the 3 "varieties" of of War Nickels one might encounter... L) GOOD nickel pulled from circulation M) BAD cleaned nickel found in circulation, R) UGLY chrome plated nickel also from circulation. I've also seen nickels like this in "sets", the type sold by mail-order, etc. Such a shame.

After 20 boxes, I've saved 15 War Nickels (although only 3 in the last 10 boxes! Not sure why they got so hard to find all of a sudden), 10 Buffalo nickels (several dateless), and 2 V-nickels. Still have 9 holes in the set though, that seems a little lower than average. Fun times though ...

I think mine was just done on a polishing wheel. Worn smooth all over.
