SteedaFLA- as far as the soaking in vinegar goes, every coin will take a different time, depending on how heavy the wear is. If the wear is extremely heavy, the vinegar wont work, although this is not very common. most of the time the vinegar works. Ask CaptainFWiffo if you want a another good perspective, he did a project on this. For pictures of these, I think I have a few.   This was by far the best turnout I ever had. The coins was a 1915-S, and the 1915 was completely gone. I left it in vinegar for a LONG time, maybe a month if I remember correctly. As you can see, the downside of the vinegar is the corroded like surface the nickel will get after being soaked. This is because the vinegar acts on every part of the nickel, not just the date. If you are going to do this, make sure when you are satisfied with the date, 1. wash the nickel in water to remove vinegar, but DONT scrub or clean, just rinse. 2. set the nickel to dry somewhere. If you dont do this your nickel turns blue/green from the vinegar reacting with the copper (or something like that  ) Good luck! As far as I am concerned, a corroded nickel with a date is better than one without a date! |

I really appreciate the advice and the pictures. I put three dateless buffalos in vinegar a few days ago. I'll just keep on checking to see if any date shows up.

$200 of nickels today got me
3 Silver: 1943P, 1945P, and 1945D
2 semi-keys: 1946S, and 1958

Boxes 28 and 29, each produced one silver.
I took them in to dump. I dump at chase, lots of them around my town, and I work all over so easy for me to dump, without seeing the same bank again for a while. Guy asked if I was a collecter, I said yes, he asked if I wanted 2 more boxes, I said sure if its not a problem, he said not at all, even gave me a big stack of rollers, then asked if I was into halves, said he had 50$ in machine rolled, I bought them to. Nothing in those, Ill just add them to my next dump, thought I might score a bonus with the halves, oh well, still got my 2 weekly halve boxes to look forward to. Iv got 2 more nickel boxes for the weekend now, and saved me running into 2 more banks.

Found a coupon for a free medium fries at McDonalds in an NF Strings & Sons roll. Too bad it expired in 2010!

I found a 1950 D.
I sat there and looked at it about 5 times after I flipped it over and saw the D.

Hello fellow hunters! First time posting in the nickel thread. After a monster box of halves a couple months ago, I haven't found many keepers. Matter of fact, its been $5500 since my last box with silver though I have found a few proofs and NIFC's. Anyway, I decided to do something different and it looked like ya'll were having fun so I grabbed a box of nickels. Here's my results 40...x2 42... 43P.. 46D..x3 46... 48D.. 49D.. 51... 53... 54D..x2 56... 56D.. 58D..x3 59D..x4 71 Canadian 5 cent 2005 Bahama 5 cent 2002 Euro 5 cent Beautifully patina-ed 63 AU I have a couple questions. is a 69 S mint a proof nickel? I have a 2000 nickel that was punched off center. Easily noticeable but not way off. All the words are still on the coin. Is it valuable? Also, I might have a 1960 Cud. Appears to be Cud but the rim almost looks bent too? PMD will probably be word on this but not quite ready to throw it back yet. Wish I had a camera to show this coin. Okie |
