Resuming nickel search again, 3 boxes produce 3 War Nickels, 3 proofes (1967sms, 1980 cameo, 1987 Deep cameo), and a 1955.

$20 in Nickels. Nothing super, a few hole fillers for the album. And a strange new coin shown below.

A sign from above, or, time to TAKE A BREAK? As I was making P-Nut butter toast this morning, and putting the lid back...THIS....a beautiful 1941-S LARGE MINT MARK!!!...EXACTLY what I have been hunting for....I see it even has the coveted RPM-OO4-N(N for NUTTY. er, like me), with an extra S south!!
Hmmmmmmm..something tells me I better take a break!

Both look like laminations rather than die cracks or breaks.

I've went through 2 more boxes from the same bank after finding the 11 liberty V nick's in that box....I haven't found any more. I did find a decent 1955 and 2 War Nickels.

I do believe you are correct hockingzig. I called it wrong on both coins.

Anyone know what causes this to begin?

The various definitions I've seen are somewhat unclear. In the case of this 62 D, was there a defect in the planchet laminations then under high pressure of the die strike, caused the split at the weakest point of the outer layer?
