Well, I looked at this topic, and you guys have done it to me. I went to the bank and got 25 rolls of nickels today. I never would have imagined myself saying this, but I could have sorted through them long past the time at which I ran out of rolls to go through. My oldest out of the 25 rolls was a 1941, I got a proof 1964 in one of the rolls, and even a mysterious oddity that I could post if anyone would be interested.

Forgive me, experts, for the impending flurry of questions, but I must know for future reference--how do you continually go back to your local banks for more rolls? Frankly, I'm afraid of making tellers suspicious of me by walking into a local bank every few days asking for rolls of nickels. Also, wouldn't you eventually run out of new rolls to sift through if you hit up all of your local banks in quick succession? How often does your average bank get in new rolls? I put a discreet identifying mark on each roll I've gone through to ensure that I don't repeat rolls, but suddenly hitting a wall where I can no longer sift through nickels for an extended period of time would still be pretty sad.

First or all pierrot,

To the Family!

I have the advantage of living in a somewhat large city, that has 117 banks in it! Most large banks will sell you a "box" of nickels ($100 face, 50 rolls) whether or not you have an account. Smaller neighborhood banks generally won't. The bank you have an account with should sell them to you even if they are smaller; if they don't it's time for you to do business with a different bank! NEVER get your rolls from the bank that you dump the coins you have looked through at; you don't want what you have already seen coming back to you! I have one branch of one bank that I am fortunate to be very friendly with ("greasing" them with cookies, pies, and donuts every once in awhile doesn't hurt!) that I dump almost all of what I go through with. I have a different bank that I don't have an account with (they just like me I guess) that has a counting machine that I use a couple of times a week, just to give that other bank a break.

To address a few of your other questions, try not to buy from the same bank all the time either, only because they will shut you off if you overdo it. With experience you will find banks that are friendlier; frequent those branches to buy your coin more often.

I don't know how large the area that you live in is, and how many banks that you have access to, but almost all commercial banks order many boxes of rolled coin from an armored service every week. Like I mentioned before, try to weed out the banks that don't want to help, and frequent more the ones that will. Be friendly; bring in "goodies" (cookies, donuts, etc) to the best banks, and you should be able to buy all of the rolls that you desire. I personally go through $25 to $50 in cents, $300 or so in nickels, and $1k to $2k in halves every week, and I manage to find places to buy coin and trade in coin. Good Luck!

Start a thread and post photos of that mysterious oddity; many folks here will be happy to help!

Thanks for all of the advice! You're fairly lucky to have so many banks around you! I have five or six within a two mile radius, and with a busy and unpredictable college schedule I often can't travel long distances in a given day, so I'll see if I can't improvise based on personal circumstances. Obviously I'm not going to be able to go through hundreds or thousands of dollars of rolls of different types of coins on a weekly basis, but I'll still be happy if I can start out with a hundred rolls of Jefferson nickels a week or so, and go up from there as my bravery increases. What I plan to do is use a single bank to cash in all of my money at, but alternate between the next-closest ones once or twice a week. Hopefully this will be just infrequently enough between banks that nobody notices what I'm up to! Well, here goes nothing. Off to get $75-100 in nickels tomorrow.

Also, how many rolls should I have gone through before I post my stats?

pierrot,

I would say after 500 rolls you will be able to see statistics trending toward what I, nickelsearcher, and others on this site are doing. Please share what you find; we want to share your excitement when you find something big!

I did my first stats at 300 rolls. That is when I started seeing consistent trends. As far as banks go, I mark my rolls and the tellers know which are mine so I don't usually get them back. I try to show the tellers the cool finds I make from their rolls and they get excited about what I am doing. In several cases I have had them hold strangely marked rolls for me(several whole rolls of wheat pennies someone had submitted for paper money).

_22_,

No, you are not on simply a "tear", you are just plain rippin' it up!

What you listed here is from ONE box? Just to contrast, all of my updates are TWO boxes (100 rolls).

That might be the best nickel box I've heard of up to now!

Piece of advice: Whatever bank you got this from, GO SEE IF THEY HAVE MORE!

And lastly: Is the 1913d a Type I or II?

Geepers _22_ .... that is not a 'hot streak' ..... that is the Mother-of-all-Nickel Boxes!

I give you some dancing fruit ...... amazing ...

Here is the deal ..... I am currently at 2060 rolls searched (41 + boxes) ..... and this box of yours is an amazing find.

What really stands out is the 'specials' you have found ... Silver War coins, Buffalo and Liberty V nickels ..... You have 15 in this box alone ....... a find rate of 1 special per 3.33 rolls.

My find rate after 2060 rolls is 1 special per 56 rolls.

You have found more Buffalo in this box (10) than I have in 41 boxes (8) ..... and more Liberty V in this box than I have (1) ..... absolutely amazing.

with CND ..... go right now to the bank and buy every box they have.

Save one for me.

Keep on reporting .... we all enjoy hearing about success.

Best

David

Wow, 22 V-nickels! And lots of silver, too. Keep up the record, I started keeping track of all the dates I kept, nickels and cents, but I eventually gave up. Great finds.

Side note, I found one of those Namco Amusement tokens in my register one day! I'd like to know what cashier accepted that!

Very nice _22_ I've yet to find any V-nickels. I've probably gone through about 500 rolls of nickels this year. I plan to keep some better stats next year. Nickels have been a bit dry for me recently. I think it's because I have been going through Brinks boxes. I always seem to have more luck with the Fed boxes.

ive gone through maybe half as many boxes as CnD but have only found 1 V nickel. Most of the V-Nickel finds on the forum seem to be from mini hoards, like _22_'s excellent box above so I suppose patience is the key. I'm surpirsed no one has found a Shield nickel yet with so many rolls searched, it will be interesting to see who finds the first. The bank I get my nickels from recently switched to brinks as its carrier and I've noticed a drop in the silver rate as well, although I've seen more higher grade pre 1960 jeffs in the brinks boxes.

XofG, I get my boxes from Brinks also and, honestly, have much better luck with silver from customer wrapped rolls. I get a lot of pre-60's stuff from Brinks but little if any silver.

Oddly enough, I find most of my silver in Brinks rolls. Fed rolls not so much. I did pull my 50d from a Fed box, though. And all of my V nickels have been from Brinks rolls, and XOG is right, all but three of them were from two mini-hoards. Would like to find another mini-hoard! And yes, it will be a glorious day when a Shield nickel shows up! I'm certain it will be dateless, but just finding one will be a thrill!
