Did a box today just for fun, not expecting anything good. Boy I was wrong!

A 1966 and a 1979 high grade coins I placed into 2x2s
2 2009 D
1951 S hole filler
1968 S and a 1959 with steps. Not sure if full steps or not
1943 S
And a couple of 1939-1960
And a dateless buffalo (6th one so far). Didn't find a buffalo with a partial date so far.

I basically got a box of nickels last night, except it was all in CWR the bank had. ($100 worth)

The-Goal:-25,000-Rolls-Of-Nickels-All-Searchers-Welcome!

The results are:

22 Pre 1960 nickels including a 1939, a 1947-S, and some VF-XF specimens
5 cent Euro (which is already profit since the Euro is worth more than USD!)
2009-P nickel (My first one!)

A handful of dirty, corroded, or just plain nasty nickels that I set aside to avoid jamming my bank's coin counter. (Believe me, I'm not keeping these, I'll just fill up rolls of them and eventually take them to another bank)

No silver or buffs, but I can't really complain. The great thing about nickels is that getting skunked is exceptionally rare (there's always some pre-1960s in there) unless it happens to be another CRHers dump.

I went to my regular bank to get some halves, but they were very busy and the very nice teller had none, so I settled on the 4 rolls of nickels she had. I found a 1955, 1941, and a 1942-P War Nickel. Not too bad for only 4 rolls.

Where is the value in older coins that are not of good quality and are not silver or buffalo? I did a search and found several 1940 nickels but them being poor grade why keep them?

Mendelman - awesome find! Some say it's the hardest.

Christopher - depends if you hoard or not. A good number like to keep the old stuff regardless. Others are more selective. And it may be relative to where you are in collecting. I started hoarding these years ago and glad I did. I learned about variety hunting later so I had a stash to go through. But now I just keep select coins. Perhaps 10-15 per box. And I'm releasing the board slowly.

Rack - the 43-D has been one of the hardest to find, but for me personally the hardest to find has been the 39-D. It's the only one left to find in circulation.

Same here mendelman. 1939D still hiding! Maybe this is the year. At any rate that 43D is picture worthy. Nice fun find!

Wow, that is one interesting looking nickel.

Actually, the more I look at it, the more I like it.

Is there a way to tell what year that nickel is?
