Nice '47 Canadian and '61 Impaired Proof, aristarchus123! Been very busy with fantasy baseball stuff this past week... back to "normal" CRH and posting activities going forward.

Completed another 1/2 box of nickels. Got 7 pre-60 Jeffersons, and a 2000S Proof. Interestingly enough, we found 2 1942D nickels. Low mintage nickels, but not silver. Still nice finds.

Nice on the two 42-Ds, dadsoncoinhobby... As for my box from last week, finally got done with it this morning. Interestingly, there were no 2009 coins in it, but a very healthy 26 pre-60s including a 45-S and 49-S and 58 Philly coins made it a very nice box.

So I usually hunt halves and dimes. But I decided I would pick up a box of nickels today. So far haven't found much. I'm not really sure what I'm looking for (besides the obvious - War Nickels, buffalo's, V's).

It seems like a lot of people enjoy hunting nickels. So I'm curious as to what makes nickels such a fun hunt.

The coolest thing about them is relatively easy to build a complete Jefferson nickel business strike set from rolls. A couple of dates might be difficult, but still not impossible.

There are a lot of dates in the Jefferson series with low mintages worth saving. Most people who collect nickels save the pre-1960 coins. Also, the 2009-P and 2009-D coins are low mintage dates which are usually saved. The main ones you want to look for are the 1938-D, 1938-S, 1939-D, 1939-S, and 1950-D - all of these have mintages under 7 million. Last year I found an AU-55 1939-D which is worth about $40! Also hard to find are the semi-key dates: 1949-S, 1950, 1951-S and 1955. These all have mintages under 10 million. The 1938, 1942-D, 1946-S, 1948-S, 1953-S, and 1958 are scarce, with mintages under 20 million.

I found a 1924 Buffalo nickel in the strangest way-it was just laying on the counter of a grocery store's courtesy desk. I exchanged a Jefferson nickel for it so the store and I were square. I'm surprised that the date was intact, although I am curious if there may have been a mintmark that wore away.

I found it along with a 1954-D silver Roosevelt in a Coinstar tray.

Nice finds, SilverRoosevelt!

As for me, I have had some really good non-silver finds this week. It got off to a great start with a 1955 Philly early on Tuesday... 15 rolls from a String&Son box that same day produced a 1938, 1942-D, 1958, and a 1976-S proof. Yes, I just had to go back and get more... so I got 24 more rolls from that same box on Thursday and they produced a 1939-S and a 1950... Other rolls produced another 1942-D along with 1930 and 1937 Buffalos.

a 1939-S

Very nice!

I got a CRHunter dump today. 14 rolls solid from the years 1938-1959. No key dates, but "common" coins from that period. One roll was entirely 1939-P coins; sadly, no DDRs. No silver either. I don't know whether I should include theses in my stats for the year. I'd like to have the rolls containing the silver and the key dates!

Update: I've moved on to MWRs and found a roll containing both a silver and a buffalo; this is a first for me. 1943-S and 1936-S. I don't think that will ever happen again!

1 box of nickels tonight. 43-D War Nickel.,1930 buffalo and a 1913 type 1. Unfortunately, the 1913 has considerable pitting on the reverse. Nice clear date though.

Thanks, aristachus123! My 8th 1939-S now... and congrats on your little hoard! I'm actually doing a totals sheet with and without my hoards just to compare... you might end up like me someday and find that full roll of War Nickels if you keep searching...

And mountainman_2, that is quite the box! I'd probably hit that bank again and get another one from there...
