How often does one roll hunt a single roll of nickels and end up with one of these bad boys?

Hunted a box over the weekend. Got two silvers (43P and 44P), and a 1939S. Still missing the 1942S silver to complete the set CRH.

Got some old coins from family over the Holidays. In a bag of Buffalo nickels, I found this 1938 D Hobo Nickel. Anyone have any ideas about authenticity or a more modern carving? By the bill is some harsh carvings that kind of look like letters/initials. Sorry for not the best photos. Thanks all!

Great find on the 1939-D, wulffy11! Those are real hard to find!

And congrats on the 1939-S, dadsoncoinhobby! You'll find that 1942-S sooner or later.

As for me, the past two months have been crazybusy with things. My life is finally getting back to normal.

This weekend I went through 8400 nickels I purchased this past Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday, finding 70 pre-60s. Highlights included 5 War Nickels, a Buffalo, and 11 2009-dated coins. dadscoinhobby, your missing 1942-S was amongst the War Nickels, along with (2) 1943-S, 1944-P, and a 1945-S. I also found a 1936 Buffalo, 1941-S Large S, (2) 1942-D, (2) 1946-S, BU 1956-D, (2) 1958-P, (2) 2009-P nickels, and nine 2009-Ds (not pictured).

Nice finds, John77! That 42S will show up sooner or later. In the meantime, went through a box this weekend and found 18 pre-60's. Highlights were a 1920 Buffalo, (2) 1945P Silvers, and a 1938D! Also found a 5 Euro Cent from the Netherlands.

The 38D was an exciting find and actually was in the same roll with a 1945P silver, a 1939P and a 1952P. As compared to the other keys, we've found 6 38D's, compared to 2 38S's, 1 39D, 3 39S's, and 2 50D's. Really cool!

Thanks, dadscoinhobby! Yeah, it was a fun way to break in the year. And congrats on that nice 38-D Jefferson! I found one in similar condition about a year ago if memory serves me right.

It's a very strange statistical anomaly that you've found 14 total of the 5 "key" date Jeffersons, but am still lacking the 1942-S. The law of averages will eventually catch up with you, I think!

dadscoinhobby,

That was a beautiful 1938d that you found. You can tell that it has been out of circulation for most of it's life.
