Afcop13, Way to go on the 38D! It's a smart idea to get Nickels from big city like St. Louis. If I were you, next time I might get 10 boxes from St. Louis.

Bought 50.00 of nick's in a small bank in so.west Mo last week and produced 2 38 d's and a buff. Better than my normal average

St. Louis is on I-70(sort of) and is in equal distance to Denver Mint and Philly Mint. Coins travel with people and cars. When people do a cross-continental trip, I-70 is of their top choice. St Louis has enough interesting things (the Arch, Univ. of Washington) for travelers to make a stop. So it can be expected to find all the S-mint(38s,39s,46s,48s) and P-mint(50, 55) Nickels. Of course, D-mint should be found here easily because it's west of Mississippi river and served by Denver mint. Another reason, it's just a big city with lots of coins. So IMO, St. Louis is a perfect place for Nickel searching.

I don't know your exact location, afcop13, but if you leave in a small town/city where you don't see many strangers or cars with out-of-state license plate, then buying boxes of Nickel from St. Louis would be a good idea.

The crooked nickel is an example of an error coin and is called a rotated die. The more rotated it is, the more value it has. I think the most sought after ones have 180 deg or 90 deg rotation. Anyway, in my opinion, yours is pretty cool because it's on a silver coin. It probably wouldn't sell for much over its normal value because it's not rotated very much, but it's definitely one to keep and show off!

About the '60-'90 XF coins, just keep looking. That's part of the game! The only reason I can think of that they are harder to find in this condition is that they are older and have seen more wear and tear. The alloy isn't any different, and the number of coins minted isn't well below the norm. Don't end up buying them because you'll pay way too much.

Check out the thread on coin photography. I use a magnifying glass between the coin and the camera when I take pictures. Make sure you have good lighting. Use the macro or "flower" mode on your camera. For some reason on my camera, when I'm in macro mode, zooming in makes it unable to focus.

My first box had whole lot of 64 and various 60's. In my case although the coins look to be XF or better, but THERE is some sort of greasy (literally) residue on the reverse. For the time being I am keeping them aside. My second box yielded more 60's but most of them had the S mint mark with the same greasy stuff. Lol

Swung by the bank by the Hotel and picked up $40 in Nickels - they had no halves, and the vault girl was at lunch or I'd have bought a box.

Anyway - not too bad.

1928 Buffalo
1939, 40, 47, 48, 50, and 54 Jeffs.

Also a foreign coin - 1991 "Bundesrepublik Deutschland 50 Pfennig" whatever that is.

My first Buffalo from a roll - and the date was fairly good, a pretty worn at the 2 o'clock - 4 o'clock position of the 8.

Overall not a bad pull from the $40 worth, I also fluttered a little on the 39 and 50 - but both are in probably AG condition at best, and no mint marks.
