Lots of interesting artifacts...South Africa must not have as many laws as the US regarding this sort of activity. Rescuing these items from the ground is rewarding in so many ways.

True. It preserves them for future generations and they are very historical. I can see why the U.S. is strict about digging up on battlefields because it is disturbing the people who fell there. However, at the same time, they are letting many important relics disappear into the ground.

That's a nice website, pattiewhack.

The U.S. is gradually coming around to allowing PROFESSIONAL archaeological surveys of many sites.

Such a survey was done of the Little Bighorn battle site in 1984-1985. The procedure was very similar to that of a modern crime scene...very forensic.

At one location they unearthed a partial skeleton of a U.S. Cavalry trooper killed in the battle. Lying near the skeleton, touching each other, were two Shield nickels dated 1870 and 1876. There was little wear on the coins which was consistent with their being in the battle.
They were located next to and just below the right pelvic bone, which would have been the area of the right front pants pocket of that soldier.

Another skeletal find enabled them to positively identify one of Custer's scouts, Mitch Boyer.

I love reading about this kind of work.

Steve

That is very interesting about little bighorn firecom. It certainly was an interesting battle. Its too bad there are many battlefields in the U.S. that are being destroyed for commercial reasons. Here in Canada there are few battlefields. Only a few from the Riel Rebellion of 1885 and some from the French-English battles of the 17th century.
