To all Canadian Coin buyers good luck in this venture. With a rising US dollar and the taxation problems associated with buying better numismatic coins, every thing that is good is about to leave Canada.

There are a few of us selling Canadian coins in Canadian dollars on ebay.ca The exchange rates and the addition of tax to Canadian buyers stops me from bidding often. Turns me right off of shopping ebay altogether mostly. I'm heading home for the holidays to visit a few dealers to avoid exchange rates, tax, shipping. Shop local in local currency.

With the slide, maybe we'll see a collectible 500$ Or 5000$ cdn banknote haha ha.
Keep in mind predicting markets can be akin to sorcery.
3 years ago the number scientists were saying 5000$ oz gold, 200$ oil. They were so sure.
It's just a rotation. The good stuff may leave now, but will likely come back in the future.
Collect what you like.
Merry Christmas, all.

What about the fact that between the two economies our dollar SHOULD be lower than the U.S.
Perhaps growing up in the 80's has affected me.. but I have naturally assumed that our dollar would be lower than the U.S. and so for the last few years have seen this as an opportunity. I purchased U.S. stock... I looked into buying U.S. property. I think there were opportunities to be had. Now I feel it's business as usual. There's a huge difference in the buying power of each dollar. The U.S. CAN be more aggressive with buying products from foriegn markets. I'm pretty sure that there were coin collectors in the 80's that lived in Canada... I think that there still will be. Who know perhaps with the exchange being the way it is... Trends will be the accurate price.... a collector may once again have to be willing to pay 100% of trends price to compete with the U.S. market.
The way I see it maybe not a bad thing for this hobby...

I agree with AgCoinAu... Hasn't our dollar always been lower? We just got to level for a few years but now it looks like it's back to normal

There are lots of sellers on ebay still using the Loonie...(and some on icollector). I usually just avoid the canadian sellers who only take US$ (not the American sellers...it is their home and currency after all). If your selling shows most of your stuff going to the US part of the reason might be Canadian buyers are avoiding you.

Back in 1999 and 2000, the exchange rate was 1.55 or so......and no grand 'exodus' of Canadian coins was occurring to the US.
Presently, if it seems all the good Canadian coins are going to the US buyers, it's only because there's no big-time Canadian collectors left and has nothing to do with the exchange rate.

I have not noticed a difference at coin shows or ebay sales, in fact, my sales have increased, with more US buyers...

I too agree the exchange rate has stopped me buying on ebay. Its rare to find someone selling in cad. I'm sort of toying with selling some of my unwanted nclt coins, so I would have some US funds to shop with. However, the new return rules of Nov.2014 put me off and I closed my store. I remember traveling sept 1999 and I paid $1.66 for every US, back in the early eighties, when I was doing US importing I was paying $!.15 for a US dollar. When my mom bought her first Pomeranian in 1973 from the states, our dollar was worth more. So it seems to go back and forth. Lately its been more down than up, which is great for anyone doing exports, or in tourism. The import side its a killer.

Is this "fall" of the CAD against the USD due to the strengthening of the USD globally? Hmmmm, maybe the rate setters should try to balance a home budget: groceries, utilities, etc. Maybe I should do more Canadian shopping?

I'm going to post some ebay US auctions in the new year of some better Canadian material, and see what happens.
