I'm collecting US coins only, pre-1965. I've collected every type of coin (ancient, byzantine, world, crowns, etc.) in the past, but for my very last collection I'm collecting those US issues only. There are many times I'd love to kick back with an actual magazine in my hands to spend a little time reading and enjoying. My question is simply what magazines you love to receive and love to read that would usually include a fair percentage of the coverage for US coins. I do appreciate your time in giving me your own favorites.

Well, I could only give you negatives so in the interest of not saying anything bad about something...

Not much to find in the magazines these days - mostly recycled pablum articles for novices and (usually, but not always) come-on adversiting with cheap prices from highly suspect dealers. If you join the ANA, you will receive The Numismatist every month, which is a fine publication. The best of the rest is probably Coin World, but even that is just a shadow of what it once was before the internet.

Numismatic News seems to have more articles and ads geared toward the budget minded collector so I like them. Coin World just seems to be pitched toward someone with big bucks to spend- that is must my take.

Maybe. Above all, avoid Coinage, which runs many deceptive ads aimed at uninformed collectors looking for a deal.

I subscribe to two publications. Coin World but mostly just for the monthly price list (retail) for US coins. Coin Dealer Newsletter (greysheet) but ONLY the monthly option. You don't need the weekly since prices don't move that much. For retail prices the online sites are better than Coin World because they cover more grades.

Hey, moxking! First, this thread may provide some useful info: https://goccf.com/t/239847I really look forward to the two magazines I subscribe to, each month. The Numismatist is put out monthly by the ANA, and includes articles targeted from novice to scholarly. Also, it includes both interesting US and World issues, news, coin shows, and a host of other related information. The ads in the Numismatist tend to lean toward high end dealers (Stacks - Bowers, Golden Eagle, etc.). The magazine is included with ANA membership is very high quality, and reasonably priced. The other one I subscribe to is CoinAge and it is also very interesting and focuses on both US and World coins. The list of contributing authors is like a who's who of the numismatic world including articles by Q. David Bowers, Richard Snow, and others. It seems to me that this magazine targets more towards the "average" collector like me (someone with budget constraints that don't allow for $300 and up purchases). That's totally an opinion. I, like you, like to put the danged computer down once in a while, sit back and enjoy an actual paper and ink product. I find the ads interesting and have developed a very long relationship with a couple of dealers who advertise in it. I hope this helps. Jack

Thanks to all of you who so generously offered your opinions. It's probably been a good 20 years since I was a member of the ANA, back before I sold my last US coin collection. But the Numismatist was always something I looked forward to receiving every month. The articles were always much more scholarly, rather than mere advertisements in sheep's clothing. So I just renewed my very old membership and even stayed with the Platinum level so I could have an actual magazine in my hands to enjoy each month. For now, I think that will fit my needs. Although I may consider some of the more commercial magazines later on, I think the Numismatist is the right one for me. And since I've been putting off getting a group of coins together to send to NGC, it gives me a bit more incentive to do that too! Again - thanks for your kind responses. It kicked me into doing something I should have done three years ago when I began my last collection I ever plan on doing - pre-1965 US Only.

Unfortunately by me having any magazines in my mail box is just not smart. Sort of like advertising what you have.
