I found this beauty while sorting through my mothers items (who's now passed) and came across this. I know nothing of value and varieties

the surfaces look very strange on this coin but could be the lighting. I'm seeing a lot of hairlines on both sides particularly on the eagle. looks polished or even whizzed. I'm going to say AU details

What is AU? My mother had this one, along with a 1923, and a 1925 in an envelope of my grandfathers for years. There was also Handful of Morgan's.

AU means About Uncirculated, meaning that the coin saw enough circulation to see a tiny bit of wear on the high points, so it is no longer mint state, but all of the details of the coin are still there since it's almost uncirculated. Details, in this context, means that the coin's surfaces were modified some way, perhaps to make the coin brighter by sand blasting it or cleaning it. This is not desirable to collectors, so a details grade means that the coin is worth a bit less on the collector market when compared against a non-details coin in the same grade.

To simplify, the value is probably in the $20-$25 range to a collector who doesn't mind the cleaning this has seen. To a dealer it's unlikely to sell for more than $15-$18.

AU-55 here as well. Surfaces do look odd.

I wouldn't know whether it has been cleaned or not, and neither of my parents are here to be able to ask, so I'm out of options at this point. Oh nuts, well it's still a cool coin to save for my kids. But question, if it was not polished as you say, would it be of any value? I mean the year, of course. I was reading something about a high relief and low relief but I can't seem to find the difference. Then again I really don't have a good magnifying glass either so....

This would be a Low Relief. There were very, very few 1922 Peace dollars struck in high relief, perhaps a few dozen at most. I agree it's likely worth around $20 but the sentimental value should be much higher than that.

The value of this Peace dollar is that it was your mom's.It looks to me like someone held it with pliers and put it to a bench grinder with a wire wheel to clean her up a bit.
