Hey all,

I'm going to be doing my very first submission at the FUN show in January. I have signed up for both PCGS and NGC, and have about 15 coins total. I'm not paying the $100 per for on-site grading, just going to drop them off.

I was wondering if you would be able to tell me how I should package my coins for drop-off. I'm guessing I still need to have them labeled in flips, rubber banded together, but I shouldn't need to provide a box, right? I'm also going to fill out the submission forms ahead of time. I hope to use the 8 free PCGS submission vouchers and the $150 NGC credit. I noticed that NGC updated their website recently and have a more streamlined process for filling out forms, which is cool.

I plan on taking before and after pics of all the coins. I mostly have an assortment of IHC varieties, including a few 1873 Double LIBERTYs.

Any other tips are appreciated!

Before you drop them off, show them to the graders at ICG and ANACS for a free verbal opinion. May save you $$$ if any are not as nice as you think.

Thanks, I'll do that.

Still wondering about packaging..

Also, anyone ever have problems going through airport security with their coins?

I'd take you coins with you, on carry on... Coins can form wierd looking bars on x-rays, so if it's requested to have your bag searched, request a room so no one can see that you have coins. Keep the coins with you at all times. If you need to get up to use the restroom, give the coins to someone you trust. If there is no one on board you can trust, take the coins with you. If you MUST put the bag up in the top compartments, make sure to put the bag BEHIND were you sit on the plane. Sure, you can't see if anyone has taken the coins, but you can stop the person that stole your coins if you are in front of them on the aircraft.

Hopefully that helped!

In regards to submission,

PCGS: They are very accommodating in regards to submissions. You can either have the coins in capsules or flips. They even provide the 2.5x2.5 flips if you don't have them. You do not need to label the coins or rubber-band (they will rubber-band it for you), according to my experience with them. If you have them in capsules, you can either put them into the flips they provide you or they even let you submit them in the capsules (they have you put the coin in the capsule in the flip). If you want the capsules returned, they can do that for you too (for no extra charge). The representatives are very helpful throughout the process.

NGC: I do not have direct experience with drop-off submissions but have used their on-site service. They accept their coins in capsules or flips, but charge a $3 fee to have the capsules returned (their "return mint packaging" service). Their representatives are also very helpful throughout the process.

For both, I do not believe you need a box (the beauty of the 2.5x2.5 flip dimensions is that it also fits into their usual slab boxes and probably the other slab boxes they would use). I am almost certain of this for PCGS but am not entirely sure with NGC. I also believe you can submit them in either capsules or flips. Last, I know you do not need to rubber-band and label them with PCGS, but am not sure about NGC.

At the coin show and for mail/walk-in, ICG takes the coins in any holder or provides free flips. They return holders, flips, and 2X2's if requested.

This is all good stuff. I'm pretty excited about going to my first show. Anyone else planning on attending?

Make sure you tell everyone you deal with that this is your first show. You may get lower prices and dealers ( who are not busy - and let's hope they all are) may spend extra time to explain the coin market and give you tips. Have Fun.

PS before buying any raw coins have them checked at the two grading services above that give free opinions. Tell them it is your first show also as they can explain why they graded your coin.
