Has anyone ever tried the Coin of the Month Clubs? I spotted an ad for one with 8 different levels ranging in price from $47.50 to $295.00 and up. If I'm just starting a collection, is this a good way to get the hard-to-find coins or should I just save my money and check around shops, bank rolls and coin shows?

My dad did something like this about 30 years ago (I think it was $6 a month back then) and the company folded after a few months. He said he never really did it enough to decided whether or not he liked it.

Has anyone had any experience with them?

Virtually every "of the month" club (coins, beer, book, coffee, etc.) is a ripoff. I think you would do much better if you set your monthly budget at the level you want and then choose your own coins from ebay, or even a local dealer.

As already noted those are all rip offs. The system is to send you something regardless of what you want in hopes you take it, pay for it and then they send you more. In many instances it is difficult to stop them. They work on the embarrasement method and hope you just keep on taking whatever they send.

Ha! You guys are great! Thanks for the advice. I was thinking along the same lines, having had grief in the past with a History Book Club. It only took a letter, two phone calls and a follow up letter to get out of the club (the process took about two months) and I still get emails and junk mail from them and their affiliates.

Yep--I wouldn't want any coin that somebody else chooses for me. They set a price to their own choice--the advantage is all theirs. Since I have mixed feelings about ebay, you may even consider buying some coins from trustworthy, seasoned collectors here. I guarantee you'll get more for your money than your average "cull of the month club"
