On the ATB Quarters the lettering on the outside area of the quarters is incuse. (sunk into the coin) On the die, they are raised and when machine damage happens during the strike, it enlarges these incuse devices to make them larger. This is very common on these quarters. If you have a roll of them, you would see that it happens often. (sometimes a large percentage look like that) So they are common MD.

The doubled letters are enlarged during the strike. Machine damaged.

Incuse and raised devices are affected differently on machine damage.

Raised devices are reduced by MD.

Incuse devices are enlarged by MD.

Hub doubling on raised devices enlarges the size of the devices.

Hub doubling on incuse devices is actually reduced in size.

A double rule that confuses many.

How do I know which is which though?
How can I find out which coins have the raised and which have the Incuse to start with?
Thanks

Look at the coin through an eye piece and rotate the coin 90 degrees. That is when you can see the incuse devices sunken in. The VDB after 1918 has been incuse. The Shield EPU is incuse. The ATB Quarters have the devices on the outside edge of the coins reverses incuse. Other years/denominations also have this, but it escapes my mind right now.
