Never knew such a thing existed until I was poking around yesterday for the auction of the day.

They are very cool looking, and obviously not cheap.

Thanks for the link, I've never seen one either. I was wondering if anyone could give some info on them. I know very little about currency and would love to find out more about this odd looking Lincoln. Any info from a more currency-minded person would be appreciated.

It's a shame that someone trimmed an otherwise good note. At least the seller was honest in noting that.

The "Porthole" Lincoln $5 silver certificate is a very popular note. It was only issued for one year, 1923 and with only one series, so it is a relatively scarce note. The one and only signature combination printed is the Speelman/White. It was also the last of the $5 large notes, adding to it's popularity.
I'm surprised that the ebay note went for so much, having been 'trimmed' and all.
The 1923 large note was replaced by the 1928 small sized federal reserve note, and the 1934 small sized silver certificate, both of which more closely resemble today's $5 Lincoln.
