I know a little bit about collecting paper money but I am not sure about holding on to certain types of newer bills. When I get a star note of any denomination I hold on to it. If I get notes of any denomination that are in sequence I hold on to them. Is this a good thing or should I be looking for something more specific? I also like to hold on to all the small faced bills I get becouse you dont see them much anymore. Does anyone know if that is good/bad Thanks

One thing besides star notes that I look for are low serial numbers. Like 00006574 and such

Something else with you collection though...If you have the means to have enough cash on the side that is towards your collection then go for it. I had to get rid of a Lot of my cash such as star notes cause I needed it more at the time then it just sitting in a book not being worth that much

"Solid Serail Number 77777777 or 11111111
Ladder Serial Number 12345678 or 87654321
Repeater Serial Number 12341234 or 21342134
Radar Serial Numbers 12344321 or 98766789
Low serial Numbers 00000021 or 00000134
High Serial Number 99999912

The number 8 is considered lucky to the Chinese. If you found a note with solid 8's some Chinese people will pay millions for them. Currency with solid 8's in Asia are destroyed when they are printed because of this.

Even if a serial number is 00009999 then it would carry a premium. But the more solid the number, the better." --Tykimeister

Tykimeister sums it up pretty well and I think the only one not mentioned is one that you already did and that's the consecutive serial numbers.

well I didn't know that 8 was lucky to the Chinese! The serial number things I try to keep an eye out on. Does anyone still know if collecting small faced bills with nothing really special is a good idea? I'm under the impression that the small faced bills go back to a federal reserve bank they get taken out of circulation and destroyed! Dunno though

I wouldn't save the "small face" bills unless there's something special about them: star note, collectible serial number, or maybe if they're in CU condition. Otherwise, they probably won't go up in value, not even for the next couple of decades. Modern notes just don't have much value unless they're in CU condition.
Of course, errors always command a very nice premium. The star notes are worth hanging on to, especially if they're in a very high grade.
Here's my best advice about collecting notes. Trade any modern notes you have for quality collectible notes from the early 1900's or even earlier. If the dealer gives you a premium, because you're paying with star notes, then all the better!

Personally, I do save the small faced bills. I seldom find them in change any more and keep those few. When I worked as a cashier I'd usually find a few but then again, I was going through a lot more money then.

I would not save circulated star notes unless they were in great shape and came from a super short printing.
I only collect CU notes for various sets.
