There's something under the D of this nickle. I'm assuming it's an S underneath.
What do you think?

I think it is. The pics are a little fuzzy to get clear looks, but that definitely has the right markings.

Sure looks like it to me. There are a few variants of the D/S - more than one different reverse die was involved. Here's a detail of the one I sold recently:

1938-Buffalo-D/S?
