Merry Christmas Everyone!

Just wanting to post a picture of my 1881 3 Cent Planchet error coin. There's a large piece of metal missing, but the die still managed to press enough to squeeze some of the date and rim on, so I think the missing piece must have been gone before it was struck?

I would love to know more about this coin. The reverse is entirely normal, no hint of the missing metal. How rare is something like this? Value wise, is there any premium (if any)?

Jeez. Looks like a major lamination or struck thru.

Looks like it was missing the piece before it was minted. You can see the ridge pattern and numbers continuing across the missing piece.

No the piece was present when it was struck. If it wasn't it would have partially wiped out the void and you wouldn't have that high sharp straight edge there at the deep end. And when a coin is struck through something the details can often be transferred through it. If you ever see a coin that is split after striking, or a clad coi that has lost a clad layer after eing struck you will see that the design is still visible, though mushy and distorted, in the area of the missing metal.

Can we see a photo of the reverse? Is the coin really weak in the opposite side?

It appears to be full strike on the reverse.
