How can you tell the difference between a weak strike and wear?

Weak strike is best detected by examining the high points of a design with a powerful loupe (at least 10X) looking for wear (less than MS), or mint luster (MS or better), in the larger high point areas.

Experience can be of great help to properly decide.

Quite often, this minute amount of wear cannot be easily seen in posted pictures.

Look for breaks in the luster. Rotate the coin under a light and you will usually see dull spots if it is wear and no, or minimal, breaks if it is mint state. Also remember most coins were handled in large bag quantities at some time in their lives that can leave signs of rubbing on the high points that is not considered wear.
