chill - The easiest way in my opinion would be to buy an old Krause guide for North American coins - once they are a couple years old they are really cheap in Overstock or used book stores. They list all US, Canadian and Mexican coins provide all metal contents - all in a small format book that is easy to carry around. Even if the prices are dated you can gauge relative value. If you are in it for bullion silver - that would be a perfect and cheap solution.
