Hi All,

I am new to this forum and this is my first coin error so sorry if I am doing something wrong here. Rather than guess I figured I would ask the real experts here, so thanks in advance for your help. I found a 1989-D Dime and on the front it is stamped correctly however on the back there is no stamping but it has a bump in the middle of the coin. There is a slight lip at the top of the coin on the back and if you look on the front the coin lip is thicker there where the lip would be on the back. Do you think this is a coin error or damage from use causing the back to be gone? It doesn't look heavily damaged or filed down but curious if this is a true error when it was minted.

Thanks,
Brian

It's a bit of a puzzler. The bump on the back makes me think it was once a piece of jewelry (tie tack maybe?). I don't know why the devices would have to be ground down for that.

Maybe someone started to make a Magician's coin and gave up.

I don't think it happened at the mint.

I'm not 100% certain so wait for another opinion.

I'm 95% sure it's PMD, but I'm not sure what. I agree that it may have been an attempted Magician's coin.

to CCF. It is PSD IMHO. Looks like it was on a lathe and they left the mound in the middle for some reason.

It is without a doubt PMD, the removal of the cupronickel cladding on the reverse has exposed the copper core.
