Okay, so I just bout someone's collection and I was going through each coin in detail, I noticed something weird on this 1874 fish scale. The letters "CA" in Canada appear to be crooked. They don't line up with the rest of the letters in the word. I looked at some other pictures of 1874s and they don't seem to show this same thing... *** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***

just looked at both of mine and neither of them show this marker either. Cool find! Can we see the other side of the coin as well? The 1874 SD has a 4/4 variety that I've had a lot of trouble finding. I know of one but it's part of a friend's collection and he will not sell it.

Wow, now I am curious at what you have.
I concur with AgHoarder, I would also like to see the reverse of the coin, please? As well others reading this thread too.
Thanks

So wonder if we have a die variety that has just now been "discovered"? Wonderful way to start off the new year with a new mystery. Ain't this a great hobby? I'll have to add this to my "Look For This" list.

OK here is the reverse for those who were asking. I appreciate all those who have commented so far and look forward to anyone else that wants to share their opinions.

Excuse my lack of knowledge on these early variants.
Was it that the letters in Canada were repunched on the working die and blundered while doing so? Or was it that the letters in Canada on the master die were repunched and blundered while doing so?
If the later is true, a new working hub would've had to have beeen pressed to create a new working die.
Is there a way to figure it out via other markers?

Your right, I didn't notice it before but the D is very low! I compared it up against everyone of my Victorian nickels including the other 1874... This is the only one I have with the "sinking D" in DEI as well as the high A in Canada.

They probably used the same Obv working dies in '74 as they did in '58. Both the original posters coin and the 1858 have heavily repunched first 2 letters the same as well.

It is not the same die type as used in 1858. All 1858's are wide, flat rim with portrait 1, all 1874h's are narrow, raised rim with portrait 2.
Like the 1858 misaligned CANADA it is the N and second A which are out of alignment, not the CA. The D in DEI is not atypical for this year, there are more than one varieties of OBV2.
