Hi Everyone,

I just finished reading about the new nickel for 2006. I know there has been a lot of nickel bashing because Jefferson is still featured on the coin. Also that everyone wanted a liberty design. However since we're going to have ol' T.J. on the nickel let's look at the new design and compare it to the old.

From the photo shown in the CW. I like the new design better than the old one. The frontal portrait of Jefferson makes it a lot easier to identify and gives the coin a more 3-d appearence. It also looks like the mint may have went back to using the deeper relief for the reverse. If I'm judging correctly, from the picture, the reverse has been re-engraved to bring out more detail. I will be willing to bet that the satin finish versions in next years mint sets will be super.!

I wonder how collectors will feel about it after carrying this design for 66 years? 100 years?

I still find any "permanent" design just plain wrong. The fact that we are stuck with Jefferson - Monticello simply because of politics just makes it that much worse.
It sickens me that "we" allow and accept this.

ND,

I think everyone agrees with you. However since we're stuck with the design we can still look at the positive aspects of it.

I agree. While the same person is still on it, there were a lot of changes to the look of the coin, which is a plus. I think it definitely looks nicer now.

At least it has been updated and will not be mistaken for an older one. I think in a few years they will legislate changes again. I't happens quite often. Mike
