Hey guys, been awhile. If you sent me an email about a trade or sale I will get back to you. Christmas cold, eh?

ANyways...

Lot 2023 in the upcoming Album auction is for a fish hook larin.

http://db.stevealbum.com/php/lot_au...=2023&lang=1

I have seen the "hair pin" larins with proper partial Persian inscriptions on vcoin for USD250

The opening bid on this coin is USD140 and is expected to go between USD150-USD250. An older auction had a similar piece go for sixteen hundred.

We have a 19.5% buyer's premium so if I was to email Mister Album and say I would like to place a bid and that I plan on paying with a money order on lot 2023 put me down for 225.

Now in American we have 225+45=270 which is CAD375.
edit: mixed up my currencies

I was givien CAD 350 to add a coin or coins to my collection on Christmas. I was going to go New Brunswick or Sassanian but I want to use that money towards the fish hook.

Should I pull the trigger or wait until a) CAD stops falling B) find one cheaper or C) find one locally (unlikely).

Thank you in advance for your assistance. If someone on this forum plans on outbidding me give me a heads up and I won't even bother.

Doesn't really fall under Ancient or Medieval coinage, I think you might get more help if I move this to the World Coin section.

Sorry about cluttering up your sub-forum, echizento. I knew it was 19th century but had a brain fart. I always associate anything Persian or Indian as ancient for what ever weird reason. Hopefully someone can give me an idea of what I should do with this auction here in the "world" sub-forum.

I have a few Larin's: I haven't been watchign recent sales( but I was watching the Steve Album sale) The estimates that steven Album provides are usually pretty well on the mark. I have noticed the prices have been edging up over the last few years. However it really depends on how many bidders are out there. The LArin dates to 16th-17th century and from my collecting perspective are important trade coins. The best piece I have is a Saudi Arabian copper example.
Heritage auctions lot 34651 would be a much better bet; but it may well go for close to US$1000.00

They were made in copper wire too you say? I found one local-ish (Eastern side of Canada) with the mint mark Kha sheen alief noon.

Prices starting to go up and estimates are good. Those are two great signs.

How rare are these? I found 3 hair pins for sale and that fish hook. All Persian, none Arab. Would I have to wait a few years to find another fish hook up for auction?

Tin or copper and used in the Dutch East Indies? I do not know a whole lot about them. I though they where used only around Arabia/Persia/Sri Lanka.

I got that they are a trade coin, often cut at the ends to make sure they were not plated. All coin collectors can relate to seeing something cool and wanting it. Now I just have to get my reading in so I don't make a dumb mistake.

I haven't been keeping close tabs but my impression is the Ceylon examples are the easiest to find.

the Indian Ocean was a highway from Phoenician times. If a coin was used in the Persian gulf it will have made its way to Indonesia or even China ( and in the reverse direction)

They were made predominantly in silver but Copper( the Arabian Example I have is very rare) and pewter are not unknown...... I always fantasize about finding a gold one( produced in the Arabian Peninsula) but, from memory, the last sale more than 10 years ago was close to 20K. When the gold ones come up for sale middle east oil money usually backs the successful bidder

Thank you so much austrokiwi. So with the estimates being fair would you say CAN375 USD270 EUR249 is an ok(ish) price to pay? I imagine with shipping and what ever the Queen Mother decides to tax me I am looking at $400+.

the price is fair if you are looking at holding for at least 10 years. If you can; bid live Steven Albums live bidding system is easy. Bidding live increases your chances of a bargain as floor bidders will sometimes push a bit further with sealed/mail bids.. with internet bidders they are a little more cautious.

Ok, I may have to try that. I do not have Paypal though. I will read over his terms and figure out how to register. Can't be that hard. I'll report back here after the auction to let the forum know how I did.

Thank you for the link gxseries, I almost lost it when someone posted a picture of a paperclip and ask if it was authentic.

Now I am more confused though. Austriawiki seems to believe that the Ceylon example is the most common but that other thread says otherwise. I personally only seen the one example in my searches but have found several hair pin styles.

I signed up for icollector and under "references and past auctions" I just sent a link to this thread to Album. I was approved and book marked the lot.

It looks like ancientnoob has some experience in this area of collection so hopefully he might shime in too.

I hope this all makes sense. My aunt's computer is acting weird and I had to retype several passages over again. My little bleeping writing line is jumping all over the place and the built in mouse pad is highlighting everything and througjing my text around.

So I just googled "koku ridi" and found 12 of them sold a wee bit ago at HA.

Could someone tel me what they went for? I don't have an account there and I tryed to paste the link in the text box here but every time I go to a different tab my mouse won't let go of it and it pulls it into a new window and when I go to paste it in here I get redirected to a dating site and I lose everything I typed out.

I am about to lose it...

My comment is based on my experience in looking for Larins. That experience has been that the examples from Ceylon appear more often in the market than the ones from Arabia and Persia. That said I forgot about the indian strikes which may be the most common of the lot.

To expand:
I am suspicious of "book" indications of rarity. In another area, a coin I have been looking for is rated in the catalogs as Common. After 3 -4 years of hunting I have only two examples that are barely collectible grade wise. My experience in this case the coin may well be common but it is extremely hard to find and seems to never turn up in a grade higher than fine.
