Hello all, Appoligies for my recent bout of inactivity. The holidays have always been very hectic time in my line of business & then StarWars came out & shattered every movie record that was ever held. Horrible time to be a manager of a cinema! LOL. This brings me to my next topic. I had an epiphany during the holiday mayhem & realized that I am grossly underpayed! I've survived blockbusters before (Jurassic World, Furious 7, Twilight, The Avengers, Harry Potter, The Dark Knight Rises, Skyfall, The Hobbit, Hunger Games) just to name a few...but StarWars takes the cake by miles & has definitely shed some light on my careeer. I've always had the childhood dream of driving a Big-Rig truck, seeing the country & being payed to do so, but the cost of CDL school & the undertaking of such an expensive vocational education & not being able to work during the time of training has always presented a roadblock. I have a family who depends on my income. This is why this tax season I've decided to divert the funds for my annual family vacation & use my refund to take the plunge. I'm going to school to be a Big Rig trucker! My refund should be enough to pay tuition & keep my family afloat during the mean time. This puts an astounding amount of pressure on me due to the fact I'll have to put in my 2 week notice and essentially pay my Rent, utilities, groceries etc. out of my savings for the duration of training and until I get signed on with a national carrier. Talk about pressure! Once training is completed & I'm on the road I have the potential to generate a 60% annual increase in salary! If I don't succeed, I will have lost my job security, health insurance & possibly my house. Risk vs. Reward. I'm confident in my ability to succeed & don't plan on taking the plunge until March 1st. This gives me plenty of time to study the CDL manual & take practice exams (which I've already been doing the last 2 weeks). My wife is leery about me being away from home for extended periods of time, but also excited at the possibility of owning our own home. My daughter is only 2 at the moment and I think now is a great time to get the 2 years of experience I need to eventually get a local dedicated job. Wish me luck.

going down the interstate.

Good luck to you! My father recently changed jobs from being a mechanic in a car dealership to working on a lot of heavy trucks and equipment so he had to get his CDL in the process. Make sure you get plenty of road time in a big rig with an experienced driver and make sure you know your pre-trip routine backwards and forwards before you take the test. From what he said the written portion was the easy part but the skills portion was more of a challenge.

Some 20 years ago I too had to make that change and boy did I make the right move. Quote: I'm confident in my ability to succeed & don't plan on taking the plunge until March 1st. It will not be easy but I have a strong feeling that you will achieve your goal. Your needed strengths and motivation. Good luck, I hope it all works out for you!

Wishing you good luck is one thing. I do too.
I will issue you an instruction: Make sure that you stay in contact with your family BY VOICE on your mobile, EVERY day while you are apart. Best time to communicate is after the evening meal. The most important factor in the cohesiveness of a family is communication. Your wife is left to make all of the executive family day to day decisions, rather than making shared decisions.
Your family is more important than your house.

CC-- good luck You're living a dream I had a long time ago and never did. Too old now to do it so I'll root for you. I sincerely hope it exceeds your expectations! I'm green with envy but cannot wait to hear of your travels!

Lots of time away from home depending on the job, but kudos for following your dream and good luck.

You're a manager of a cinema? That's SWEET! So what do you get, free movies whenever? LOL.
I don't know if you work there currently or not as of now, but what do you guys do with the old movie posters and promotions and stuff? Straight to the dumpster? I've love to have some promotional posters for big movies.

I sincerely wish you luck. Talk to some truck drivers, maybe johntookit? Anyway, research what is the best company to get experience at, which company is best to work for, and the most employee considerate company.
It is NOT all excitement and glamour. There are long grueling hours behind the wheel. Vehicle maintenance, repair, and breakdowns. Yeah, the company has mechanics, but you'll be the boss at the incident.
Eventually look for a job spotting trailers in the company yard, or something that gets you home every night.
Also, you are entering a segment of society that has an alternative lifestyle, be prepared.
Anywho, I predict long distant truck drivers will be replaced by robots within the next twenty years.
