My quest for a Peace dollar collection is going pretty slow so I've recently got into the WL half dollar coins. I've got a few examples from the 40's in pretty nice raw condition but now I'm thinking I may want to get a higher value date slabbed in MS condition.

My first thought was the 1938-D. While still pricey in MS, I may be able to afford one (still need to do more research). Is the 1938-D really a valuable coin or is it kind of like the 50-D nickel where the mintage is low but they can be found in MS pretty easy? I'm pretty sure a more rare teen year or 1921 WL is going to be out of my range in MS condition. Are there any other dates that may be under-rated that would be worth looking out for in MS condition slabbed? I leave MS kind of vague because I haven't done enough research to know the price differences in MS60-66 condition for each coin but I think I'd prefer MS (might consider AU-58 if the coin is nice enough). I'm more-so looking for a year/MM that has a higher upside.

Thanks!

Good luck! If I were you, I'd find a coin I liked for a good price rather than deciding on a date/MM before hand. Anyway, would you rather have an F-VF collection with one MS coin, or a solid EF collection? I'd rather go for an all-around good set.

Go for a consistent grade set where each coin has been carefully selected for optimal eye appeal in the grade range. A WLH EF set is reasonably priced and I bet with enough time and patience you'd put together a real winner.

Thanks guys, I was actually just thinking of buying one nice MS coin. I'm very slowing working on a Peace dollar collection so I won't have the cash for a full WL set too. Do you guys have a WL set?

You should easily be able to find a nice MS walker cheap. Heck I have 2 MS64 in the for sale forum right now. Once you start getting into the key dates though be prepared to take out a second mortgage. I do have a full set of walkers that I've been slowly upgrading. Hopefully one day it will all be MS, but for now it's complete.

The 38-d is more common than one would think. Though not in MS. You might try what a few of us do. Have three albums. The "complete" album with the "who cares what condition it is in". The "upgrade album" with the nicer coins; and the MS album. All have their appeal.

38-d is the 3rd smallest mintage Walker (only the 21-d and 21-p are rarer).

But maybe it feels common... 972 for sale on ebay.

Potential upside? See if you can find a nice well-struck 1941-S at a decent price.

That is, there's more to determining a Walker's upside than mintage & grade.

If you could get a Walker set in VF-EF condition especially for key dates you would have something. The common dates from 40's and 30's are just about worth their weight in silver. I have a set of Walkers and I am still improving it when I can. I got me a nice 1916-S a while ago. For anything beyond VF condition for the key dates and early dates you will pay a lot just because these coins tend to be really worn. Even more common dates in EU condition before 1930 are going to cost you. You could fill a set of Peace dollars much cheaper in AU condition than a set of Walkers in VF condition.
Rest in Peace

This is kind of where I'm at although set #1 is not quite complete, set #2 is a Library of Coins album and set #3 is in flips at the moment.

I have a 1916-S Walker in F+ condition and I paid good money for it. Are you sure those are "S" mintmarks? 1916-S Walker in good condition should sell for at least $80. If you can read full date and see the mint mark the coin is worth much more than $5. That is not even the silver value.

I suggest a MS or slider AU of any of the years between 1923-S and 33-S. Undervalued and really hard to find.
