So my grandmother gave me a coin she had received from 60 year old women back when she gave birth to my parents. She gave it to me and asked me to see if it was real or not and to see how much it was worth.
I know that most of them are fakes but this coin has real silver and failed the magnet test so I'm at least a bit curious.
I took the coin to a pawn show that dealt with a lot of rare coins and the man told me it was worth 13k after getting it looked over. I looked at estimates online and it's supposed to be worth much more than that.
How should I go about getting the coil evaluated?
PS, first post, sorry if posted in wrong section.

James! Is there any way you can post a picture of this coin? It would better enable us to help you. As for an offer of $13,000 a pawn show may not the best place to go with a rare coin. Do you have any coin shops or coin shows in your area? edited for spelling

There also seems to be several coin shops in my area. Any recommendations for how to approach them, what I can expect? What I should do at the coin shop to ensure I don't get scammed?

to CCF! Unfortunately, there is a 99.99% chance that your coin is counterfeit. We really need to see pics of your coin because we see fake ones all the time here. Assuming your coin is real, it is worth a LOT more than $13k. We can't really help you until we see some pics of your coin.

advice-DO NOT sell it to anyone, if you get multiple people offering to buy it than it is very possibly real and they want to rip you off. do not let ANYONE buy it from you, just say youll think about it and take their card.

A genuine 1804 silver dollar would be worth... Over a million dollars. I don't think it's legit, but you never know. Let's see if we can get pics

There are just 15 known genuine 1804 silver dollars. If your coin is genuine, it would be a new discovery. Before you get too excited, there are probably 1,000,000 or more FAKE 1804 silver dollars. If a coin does not stick to a magnet, that just means it does not contain enough iron to attract. Many counterfeit coins are made of silver plated copper or brass or other non-ferrous (not iron) metals. I am confused about how your grandmother could give birth to both your parents (unless your parents are brother and sister) ...

If you truly think it's real (and got offers) I'd try to send it in to get authenticated by PCGS. I'd be nervous about it getting lost in the mail or something so , I'm not sure if there is a physical place where they grade coins.

Take it to a real coin shop and see what their opinion is. Have them weigh it and see if they think it's authentic. Posting pics here would be great help for us.

As stated above ,your coin is more than likely fake. but I would take it to a reputable dealer of rare coins. Not your average mom and pop shop. also you were given advice not to sell the coin to ANYONE ! good advice. but I need to stress ; If it's genuine it would be like hitting a million $ lottery.

I'd send it to ANACS, wayyyyy cheaper. Anyways, T-BOP I would almost say it's better than wining the lottery, as who knows when another 1804 dollar will show up at auction?!
