I have been browsing the specimen year sets. I have noticed the sets from the 1970s have a different finish than current years. I much prefer the linen finish and wish they used it for silver coins too. Its very striking to look at. When did this change occur.

The other thing I have noticed is they must not be that popular, since secondary prices are mostly under issue. I am thinking of starting a specimen set collection of the years with the linen look. Are they made from nickel or are they plated too. The bird loons are very attractive too.

Is this the same finish as on the XforX coins.

I don't get why an affordable set lacks popularity. It seems an affordable way to collect attractively displayed yearly coins, with a superb finish. The plain circulation sets just don't grab me. Especially since they are the same as from new bank rolls.

In 1996 the Mint changed to a parallel line background
on the Specimen Sets.

I didn't think it went that far back. I thought maybe 2000. I wonder why they didn't change the name of the finish. It seems their other use for it is on $20 for $20 coins. I find it an attractive look, along with reverse proof.

Charlton says it was changed in 1996. It was also changed between 2009 & 2010 which is where the lynx set mule 10c came from. it also says "<the 1996-2009> finish was a variety of that used by the Bullion Department on their maple leaf coinage. However, this finish was surfacing on giftware coinage, so it is thought the time had arrived to again make specimen set coinage a distinct finish, brilliant relief on the obverse portrait and reverse design, with a frosted relief on the legends, and date, all on a lined matte background."

As you say, the regular specimen sets frequently go for less than issue however the bird loonie series and the young wildlife toonie series frequently go for more.

Don't confuse the BU (PL, NBU etc) sets which were made with a 'special' process with the UNC sets that, as you say, basically contain the same coins as rolls. Pre-2006 sets are BU. In 2006 the specialty sets (birthday, O Canada etc) were changed to circulation. In 2011 the basic pliofilm set was also changed to UNC and the production of BU coins was discontinued.

Oh Lord, this is getting more complex than I imaged. When did they start issuing the special bird loon sets. I have the 2012 for the anniversary loon and last penny. I noticed they have lowered the amounts of sets made. The special toonie never appealed to me. When did these sets appear. I hardly ever look at giftware items.

I'm amazed they make 60 k of the ordinary circulation set and most sell. So there must be a sizable collector base. More than we see here on the forum. I do wonder what size the worldwide nclt base is. Whether its growing or shrinking. There are so many terms and dates to remember. I feel for new collectors venturing into learning all these. Three and a half years and sometimes I get confused, like on these specimen sets.

I think they're more popular with US & International buyers. The first bird loonie set was the flying loonie in 1997; both the 'regular' style specimen set and the O Canada set. The next was the family of loons in 2002 for the 15th anniversary. There were 2 in 2004; the elusive loon coin & stamp set and the 'regular' Jack Miner's Goose Sanctuary set. 2005 to date there has been one issued each year.
