I'm considering a Mexican 8 reales pillar coin for purchase.

Details look really strong and everything seems correct. But the seller says the weight is 26.7g and the diameter is 38.5mm.

I've never owned any of these but they often seem a little lumpy and possibly subject to a little fluctuation.

Would anybody consider this a normal fluctuation from the ideal 27g and 40mm?

There is not just one type of Mexican pillar 8 reales. Good pictures from both sides and, even more important, edge are needed. Think twice before you start collecting them, there seem to be more fakes out there than authentic ones. Some of these fakes have become so sophisticated to even fool seasoned experts!

Here are some images. I am sorry, but I couldn't get the image of the other side of the coin to work. Not sure why.

If it's real, it would be a good deal at the price.

Again it has been measured at 26.7g and 38.5mm.

Thanks for any thoughts.

Yes, the weight is too low for the condition. Be very suspicious.

I am a bit concerned with the shape of some of the letters and I thought the apparent doubling of the 'N' in more than one place was odd but when I compared to my 1744 I see the same effect. I'm not convinced the details on your example are genuine, however.

Thanks for the photos. The person ended up pulling and getting more people to take a look at it, considering it was possible too small and too light.
