Good evening everyone. Hopefully this is posted in the correct place. I have had these two coins for a while now. Coins aren't my thing so I know nothing about them. I'm hoping someone can point me in a direction to have them checked out. Not sure if they are worth sending off to get graded or is value in gold only? I'm guessing it is hard to tell from pics but not many coin places here. Mostly pawn shops that buy gold. Thanks for the help.

Jay

to CCF!

I don't think either one is really worth grading, unless you have a personal reason for getting them slabbed. BTW, your 1897 is actually an 1897-S

Looks like a 1914-D as well. You could auction that online and expect $300 to $350. The 1897-S would nab an extra $100 or so in value so up in the $450 range.

Try to sell them to a dealer or a pawn shop and you'll lose 30% or more on the prices I am telling you.

Good luck.

The Indian is fake (but still made of gold), and the Liberty is about AU 50.

Look at the back of the Indian's neck in the square formed by the headdress and the shawl. There should be a constant decline from the left side to the right side. However, it only goes about halfway, and the rest of the space is flat. This is called "lake-effect" and is diagnostic of counterfeits across all types, caused by a loss of relief when making transfer dies.

Also look at the rim from 9:00 to 12:00. See how the stars and letters seem to be fallikg off the edge of the coin (they are losing detail at the edge of the coin)? This shouldn't happen on genuine coins, and is diagnostic for fake incuse Indian gold coins.

The fake is likely to de of Middle-Eastern origin.
