I have a friend that has asked me to buy his AG/G Seated
dollar. I think it is a 1871.

I don't really need this coin, but I am thinking of
buying it just to help the guy out.

I am curious if other collectors buy coin like this?

He is asking $100

In my mind I think about buying coins like this, in case
I meet someone that is looking to just fill that hole.

But then I really don't sell that many coins, and they end
up sitting in a box.

Any opinions welcome

Pics? I might be interested in buying it, as long as it's not too beat up.

Also, I am assuming you could verify weight and do a ring test, etc. for me?

I did weigh it the other day .. I think it was 25.5 grams
And put it on a electronic tester that verified it was 90%
silver.

I was not really trying to sell it on here ... because I know this section is not the right one for selling.

Of course if there was interest, I might buy it to sell
here.

I can try to get a picture ..

Yes I'd buy that in a heart beat. That's the last coin I need in my 7070 type album. I have plenty of lower grade hole fillers in the album, so it would feel right at home. ;)

GR58, what is your "electronic tester?"

Personally, I would be interested in buying an uncleaned, undamaged well worn Seated dollar at ~$100.

Pics would be cool. And I am sure there are many here (as we can see) that would love buying it. At that price, I would too possibly!

I am glad someone understands.

As for my opinion on the original topic...

The Trade dollar and two Seated Liberty dollars are all I lack for the 7070. I want them to be a little better than the typical coin in my album. Given the higher average starting prices, jumping up in grade is not much more.

$100 seems like a good deal and one I would consider, assuming the coin is a non-details (problem free) AG/G. Even if you do not like/need/want it, you could probably make a decent bit off of the flip.

Cull Seated dollars used to sell for $100 but not anymore.

It could fill a place in an album, or a belt buckle, or a pocket (without a hole).

Sounds OK if it's an undamaged piece, especially if you want to help the guy out.

Low grade hole fillers are not bad at all but I would almost never recommend specifically buying a problem coin(damaged, harshly cleaned, etc) as a hole filler. Most low grade type coins are fairly liquid but the market for problem coins can be a bit more difficult and you will probably take a loss on it when reselling after an upgrade. $100 for a AG/G Seated dollar with honest wear is always a good buy IMO

For $100...yes I definitely would.

I am hoping to fill that spot in the future with a little better than AG-G but I would still buy it and use it for a trade if I end up buying it from the dealer I purchase most of my coins from. If not it would still make a good trade for "something" or take the sting out of a pricey coin.

Normally I would not advocate purchasing hole fillers but a Seated dollar for $100? Yep I'd do it in a heartbeat.
