I've been keeping tabs on used EOS 1000D's for a couple of weeks and have found most low price (re)sellers only offer the body w/o lens or software. For those who are selling their own old cameras the price jumps but you get the full bundle. I downloaded a bunch of software from Canon for XP and Win 7. Is this all I need to replace the missing software CD if the seller doesn't include such? Since I do need a lens, am I doing good by buying the Canon EF-S II 18-55 mm lens or might I consider other Canon lenses offered or Tomioka or Rodenstock or (fill in your choice) lens I've found many of you mention? I found a post by rmpsrpms's https://goccf.com/t/249531) with a link to a ton of pics he shot using different lenses, nice work! For general purpose work, mainly smaller than old U.S. half dollars, (also a fistfull of Morgans, Peace & Ike's) will I find the Canon lens just fine? Remember I do have an option of buying just the body alone, then I can buy the better (if it really matters) lens. I do see a lot of you have bought used lenses for cheap. I have found news lenses for $$$ so this may be the biggest expense for me. Ask me questions, give me your opinions, any insights appreciated, thanks.

That's what I did recently just before I switched to Windows 10. I downloaded the latest version of the Canon software for the T6s, and it seems to be the same as what came with the camera, as far as I can tell.

If your downloaded software is functional, you're in good shape. If you need the CD, I can provide it. The 18-55 lens is not really suitable for coins, but is useful for full slab shots. The maximum magnification you can achieve with it is not high enough to fill the sensor with a Dollar, let alone a Cent. Image quality suffers because you must crop only a portion of the image. I recommend you review the "<$400" and "<$350" threads and go with the recommendations there. As a start, you can go with an El-Omegar lens (typically $15-$25 on ebay) instead of the Nikon 75mm, and you'll get nearly same image quality. You will then just need the camera body, a helicoid, some extensions, and the El-Omegar lens to get started. A tripod or copy stand will also be needed, but that is the case no matter what you go with.

I'm using the original software for my 1000D on my laptop with windows 7 and my new desktop with windows 8.1 with no issues. I haven't upgraded to windows 10 yet. I'm using a setup like Ray puts together with 75mm enlarging lens. I really haven't messed around with the 18-55 lens for coins but I think a CCF member did a while back in this thread. https://goccf.com/t/164774&whichpag...canon%2Clens

No, I think the images have been moved since the posts. I recall CB got some really good shots from the 18-55 lens.

Thanks for the replies. I did snag a Canon EOS 1000D and have added a few accessories, just need some guidance on what else is needed so I don't buy the wrong item. I now have the M42-M39mm Lens Mount Step Down Ring Adapter, Metal M42 Macro Extension Tube Camera Lens Adapter 42mm Screw Mount 3-Ring (2 of them), M42-M42 Mount Focusing Helicoid Ring Adapter 17-31mm Macro Extension Tube. I may have a 75mm enlarger lens amid my old photography equipment (it'll be 40yrs old). The M42-RMS adapter, not sure of the ebay listings for this one. Post a url for me so I can be sure I'm buying the right item. The EOS-M42 adapter I found (there are many listed) is http://www.ebay.com/itm/Adapter-For...AOxydlFSu-Cs Looking at listings for a Nikon M5 or Plan4 objective.

UPDATE. I tried downloading the software I need for the 1000D and some of Canon's file URL's are broken links! Downloaded the ksd290a_installer.xxx which is the zip file Canon mentions on their web site but it wasn't available on Canon's web site so I got it from http://www.userdrivers.com just don't know if I should trust it. One bit of software I did get from Canon said I needed to go online, which ain't happening as the laptop I'm installing on has no web access, just a used barebones laptop I picked up for cheap only to be used for coin pics. Any suggestions?

"Would you like me to send you a copy of the original disk?" Yes I would like that, email now accepted, thanks! BTW, in your https://goccf.com/t/98494 thread you mention using a Perfex enlarging lens. Was it a 75 f3.5 or 4.5?
