I am considering sending this 1877 Seated Liberty Half to NGC for grading. It looks original to me. Do people think it has a shot at AU-58?

Thanks.

I see hairlines on the obverse. I would not buy it as problem-free based on those photos. If problem-free, I think it would go AU-55, with 53 as a minimum.

Looks AU-58, but I'm not convinced the surfaces are original.

I'll go along with the AU-55 but depends upon who does the grading.
I would do a very close inspection of the date, there is definitely "something" happening there.

Either 55 or 58 if it gets into a problem free slab. A lot of detail in the hair on this one.

Thanks for the responses so far.

Under magnification it looks like a bit of dirt in the 18 of the date. I don't think it's old remaining toning and indicative of a major cleaning, but I could be wrong.

It is extremely hard to tell if a coin has been cleaned, or dipped, from photos only. However, the many, many tiny 'hairline' scratches on the surface which all go 'back and forth' parallel to one another is the strongest indication of light mechanical cleaning.

Even though you would think metal (silver) would be 'hard' enough not to pick up scratches easily, you can take a brand new silver coin out of a roll and simply 'polish' it with a soft cloth and leave these same types of 'scratches'.

It's a beautiful coin and I'm sure an accurate grade would be in the 55 or even the 58 range, but it does look like it has been cleaned to me.

Thanks for all the responses. I think I'll pass on sending this one to NGC. No use paying the money if there's a decent chance it may come back in a "Details" holder.

I'll just put it back in my collection and enjoy it as is.

I'll say AU-53.
