I picked up one of each of the new Australian Wedge-Tailed Eagle silver coins struck by the Perth Mint. As with the 2014 and 2015 issues, the coins were designed by former US Mint Chief Engraver John Mercanti. The 2016 coins features a new design. The eagle is now shown perched on the top of a tree branch and looking back over its left "shoulder." I think the design is another keeper! I wonder if a low-relief proof version will also be released (as happened in 2014 and 2015)? 2016 Australia Wedge-Tailed Eagle High-Relief Silver Coin 2016 Australia Wedge-Tailed Eagle Low-Relief Silver Bullion Coin Collecting history one coin or medal at a time! I too love the Wedge Tailed Eagle coins! I will admit I liked the first design better and wished it would be the same every year like the ASE (since so many Perth coins change every year) but it is still a very good looking coin. Just bought a BU and waiting for the regular proof to continue my album :)

@pc50: I agree, Mercanti has done an outstanding job with the eagle on this coin. There are many coins with eagles out there, with quite a few having been released within the last five years. Their designs are generally OK but when you see a coin designed by an artist who is at the "next level" in terms of talent, its quality is immediately apparent. The life-like level of detail that Mercanti brings to the eagle really makes it special. I think this recent article on CoinWeek.com will provide you with a nice introduction to Mr. Mercanti: http://www.coinweek.com/education/c...-label-deal/Here's a piece that was published when Mercanti's first wedge-tailed eagle coin came out in 2014: http://www.coinweek.com/featured-ne...hn-mercanti/FYI: I paid $129 for the high-relief version of the coin. PF70 coins are also available for $200 and up, but I didn't want to pay that much. The PF69 coin I received is flawless to my eyes - I am very happy with it.

I was able to acquire the 2014 and 2015 HR proofs but then realized my focus is being able to put coins into Dansco albums so I sold them. The 2014 made me money and the 2015s actually lost me a little bit. Sad though because they looked beautiful but had to condense my collection and these are quite pricey..

I do not have a wedge tail eagle yet, but assuming Mister's avatar is the first coin in the series then I need too. Both these coins look amazing and I have a certain weakness for animal coins. Probably the reason why I love a lot of the Australian series.

Here's my 2015 bullion coin. I bought this coin at a show from a dealer who had multiple PCGS-graded MS-69 coins along with a few "Gem BU" examples. This one was the best of the lot, it had far fewer marks than the MS-69s available. Another example of "Buy the coin, not the holder!"

Great choice, Commems When they issued the 2015 same design, as 2014, I thought "the series is dead".....but not in the 2016 The 2016 looks very good....I have the 2014 BU (imo, no issues with it) and 2015 Proof - epic design. The slabs confusing me....I would open and throw them, but this was the "Mercanti signature" will gone... So probably, will not buy 2016 Proof (budget), but will get the BU. Anyway, here is the 2015 Proof non HR.

Proud to say I have collected a few of these. While the proofs are out of my price range...I do have all three years in regular bullion coins.
Ordered 5 of the 2016s plan on selling 4 of them once mint runs out.
Love the design and the low mintage of these.

@yup it is either govmint or ebay they are exclusive. But govmint ain't all that bad, they once had a deal on the 2015 bullion ones they said would be Gem BU for spot ($15 and some change at the time) and so I ordered the limit of 5 and wouldn't you know it they sent me 5 MS69s signed by Mercanti! I was super excited about getting those at spot. Anyways I collect both the Bullion and non HR proofs so that one day I will order a custom album and have each years coins! That will look epic I think. No HR for me though way too pricey especially since they can't go in an album

@Mister Kairu-

@Yup, the email said they would be slabbed as GEM BU with Mercanti's signature limit of 5 for spot price (probably had to get rid of the 2015's as they weren't near as popular as 2014) it was a very pleasant surprise! This coin (along with pulled from circulation Kennedy halves) is the only one I want a complete bullion/proof date set of in an album. :)

MCM also has the 2016 autographed NGC 70's & 69's available, the NGC Gem BU's appear to be sold out by them.
