Hello all.
I came into a portion of my grandfathers collection 7 years ago after my grandmother passed. I say a portion because it was split up among the 5 grand kids. My grandfather passed in 1975 and the coins were in a locked chest for over 30 years until my grandmother passed. When my father divided the coins he gave me a large glass jug full of cents (Ive already learned not to refer to them as pennies) I sorted all the wheats for him and he then divided those up. I enjoyed the couple of evenings I spent at that but that was pretty much all I did with the coins until recently.
I've had my share of the coins in my basement for the past few years with little interest in them until recently when my father passed this past fall. I started going through some of the things he has given me over the years and I rediscovered the coins.(I also have a decent stamp collection from the 50s 60s and 70s that my father and grandfather put together) I've been sorting the coins here and there over the past couple of months. Mostly going through the
LWC the past few weeks. I also have a few early 70s canadian silver dollars (one is toned very nicely),
Buffalo nickles, wartime nickles, uncirculated jeffersons, a few standing liberties, a bunch of
Mercury dimes, a full roll of what I think are uncirculated 1947 dimes, some pre '65 quarters and some errors that my grandfather had already placed in holders. My wife
inherited some silver coins as well, including a Morgan or 2. She said that I can add them to my collection as she has little to no interest in them, other then the monetary value.
Thinking about all of the coins that are in my possession, I cant help to think of what my sisters and cousins have. My father did some research when he divided up the collection but I'm not sure how extensive. My grandfather sure built a decent collection.
My intentions are to sort, catalog and properly store/preserve the coins. I have a growing interest in numismatics but man there is a lot to learn. I sat down to wrap a couple rolls of 1957
LWC last night and noticed most of them are of the BIE variety. I would have missed it if it wasn't for discovering this site and doing a little research. I'm building up the nerve to walk into my bank and ask for my first box of cents... or at least a few rolls. I intend to have them to open while watching football this weekend. I'm not getting my hopes up. I really just enjoy the sport of the hunt.
If you've read all of this, thanks. I'm looking forward to learning more from this site and sharing my discoveries.
