My Silver proof eagle came in today so here are some pics. The scratches on the reverse left field are on the case and not on the coin. (Thank goodness)

These proofs sure are hard to photograph. If you look close enough you can see what brand of camera I'm using.

Beautiful coin, thanks for sharing! I can't wait to receive mine. My order was placed as soon as I could... on the 3rd day of sale.

In your estimation, Would it be better to do a quick turn-around of this coin in reselling it on ebay, or holding on to it as a long-term investment?

Pretty nice! I'm still waiting on mine. It's such a tease. I can see the mint from my deck. If it weren't for all the barbed wire and armed guards I'd just go ask them for it...

Thanks for the comments.

Panterapat,

I actually bought this for my Dad's b-day so I can't flip it. If it was mine I would probably not flip it unless I saw they were going for mad money on ebay.

Are they? maybe I should go look.

Hi -
I just joined this forum and I am new to coin collecting. I live near a US mint outlet store and picked up An American Eagle Proof Silver Dollar, which has the standard designs front and back. I also picked up the Commerative Bald Eagle Silver Proof. I paid about $10 more for the commemerative. Ok I read later that there is a donation towards the Bald Eagle conservancy and I can go along with that though I doubt it's much of the added $10. But what really ticked me off was comparing the silver content of the two coins. The standard eagle was 99.9% and the commemorative was 90%. What kind of rip of is going on here? Why do they do this? Thanks.

Ok after reading the commemorative coin history, I see that this is just the way it is. I don't like it, that's all.

The Silver American Eagle is a bullion coin and you are purchasing exactly one troy ounce of silver. Bullion is generally of higher precious metal content than coinage silver. The $1 commemoratives are minted to coinage silver specifications. Yes, silver does not currently circulate, but when it did it was 90% and the commemoratives have the exact same silver content as an old silver dollar. All of the $1 commemorative coins have a $10 surcharge added as a fundraising measure. That total amount will go to the particular cause of the commemorative program, in this case the Bald Eagle Conservancy.
