I don't see why they even put one in the top spot. I always just staple at the 3, 6, and 9 o'clock edges, and I try to punch them halfway between the outer edges and the coin. On the plus side, we know that the coin isn't going anywhere.

Not to worry, the staples are far enough away not to hurt the coin...BTW, nice one.

I don't think the stapler scratched that coin. but he was kind of close to it. as mentioned above only need staples 3,6,and 9:00 .

I always do 10, 2, and 6:00 because I find the coin scoots towards the seam if it's just stapled 3, 6, and 9:00. Pet peeve of mine.

Stapling that close does risk damaging the coin. Not from the staple, but from the stapler head.

Just noting, I have seen numerous coins (primarily larger denomination silver) with little rim dings right where most 2x2's are stapled. It seems some staplers have an edge out front that ends up hitting the coin rim even though the staple is placed away from the coin. Not sure that the grading companies downgrade for that, but it sure does hurt the appearance of some nice coins.

I see what you are suggesting ... and agree that the stapler head might have indeed damaged the coin obverse at 12:00.
Tough to say for sure with the glary photos ... but thanks indeed for sharing an educational moment with the CCF.

Quote: I don't see why they even put one in the top spot. I always just staple at the 3, 6, and 9 o'clock edges... I had a friend once who used to do that to their coins all the time; he said the same thing about staples being unnecessary there. I pointed out that, in every case where he'd done it, the coin didn't stay centred in the middle of the clear window, but would begin to ride up towards where the "missing" staple should have been - it's because the coin was being squeezed on the bottom three sides where the staples were, but not the top. Some of his coins had even started to disappear beneath the cardboard. He said he'd never noticed they were all doing that until I pointed it out.
