Haven't been able to pull the trigger, on sending in coins, for 3rd party grading. Can't decide if there is value in becoming a "member" of these services or paying someone else (coin shop) to have it done ... any experience would be appreciated ... I simply don't know what the future holds for my grading needs ...

If you post good quality pics here first then a member will help you decide if it's worth sending in.

Decision Process:
1. Decide if your coin has been cleaned/altered.
2. If Step 1 is "no", do your best to grade the coin.
3. Consult a price list.
4. If you feel the coin has a value of $200 or more then the coin is suitable for slabbing consideration.

EXCEPTION: If the coin has special meaning to you then it is suitable for slabbing consideration.

If you aren't going to sell them, then I wouldn't send any of them in.

I would also add another point. You can send in lesser valued coins to ANACS(cheaper to submit) and see how good your grading skills are. I live in the Denver area so I don't have to pay shipping so there is that. Go Broncos!!

I'd like to add something to Kanga's guidelines.

The amount you can sell it for after slabbing (And remember you are most likely NOT going to get the "list" price for it.) needs to exceed the amount you have in the coin, plus the cost, of slabbing, plus at least a small profit.

For example if you have $170 in a coin that lists for $200, after slabbing you will have nearly $200 in the coin and a dealer will give you $180 - $190 for it. The only advantage to slabbing it would be to make it easier to sell it at a loss.
