Hey everyone! My names Kenny, I'm from northern Illinois (by the lake and close to the IL/WI border GO PACK!!) - and I truly have no clue what I am doing in terms of coining!! So apologies in advance if I come across as being ignorant to the hobby, or start to irritate/annoy any of you with any of my posts!! :-) ha, but I will say in confidence, that I am well aware of how forums work in general - so yeaaa, I will be def searching through other members posts for answers to any questions I have before I just start busting out new threads right and left asking a zillion questions that I coulda easily figured out through past posts!! :-))
Anyways,, my mom keeps trying to pawn off all this stuff to me that she kept from when I was a kid (bless her lil heart #128525;) .. Well, I finally broke down and ended up taking a (very long) look through it all over this past weekend, and I came across this weird looking box laying amongst all of these childhood 'keepsakes' ..
Moms got a bit 'annoyed' that I couldn't remember what it was or what was in it - she swears that I kept this goofy little box with me at all times when I was a kid -and supposedly, I would champion the classic 'temper-tantrum' if anyone came near it! **for the record, none of that is true- I've never seen this thing in my life ha** But she argued with me about this weird mysteryBox to the point that my wife actually ended up Gettin all pissy with me about it too... Thank you KennyRodgers, for teaching me that whole 'know when to hold em and know when to fold em' bit -Cuz when I got both of these two yappers on my booty, Is about the time that I just gotta fold em and be like 'oh yeah, my bad, I remember now, sorry I forgot bout this lil guy here!' ... I gave my quick 'sorry not sorry' hugs, snatched up my 'long lost favorite box' and booked myself up on Outta there so Lucy and Ethel could finish reminiscing over my 'baby box' (that's what my mom calls the huge Tupperware bin that she keeps all my childhood crap in btw.. Kennys 'Baby Box')

If anyone's still reading this - sorry... This is becoming way to long of a forum Intro, so I'm just gonna speed my pointless novel up a bit and reveal why I'm here on this forum - and WHAT WAS IN THE BOX!!
Any guesses?!!
YEP, right ON!! COINS! A whole ton of em!! Shiny ones, dull ones, crudded up black ones, old ones, foreign ones, pennies- omg the pennies were overwhelming there were so many!! I was really intrigued by all these coins! Some dated back to the 1810's - there was even a penny that has a soaring eagle on the front instead of good ole Abe!!

But I still couldn't remeber this box -or even collecting coins at all for that matter from when I was a kid.. I started little league football when I was 10, and I only collected football cards and garbagePatch sticker cards ha.. Not coins tho.. Hmmm just pretty weird I wouldn't recall something as cool as all this -plus I've always been a big fan of money in general, so had I known about 'my spontaneous money collection' here, I'd have Prob already cashed it all out and wasted the funds on stupid stuff along the way - or Prob just beer and poker games - but you get my drift ha,, I was young, broke, and pretty dumb during my 'young broke and dumb' phase I was going through during the ages of 17-30 :-))
So here comes mom and wife up the stairs jabberin about my heMan onsies, and right as I'm throwin all the coinage back in the box, the bottom fell out -whoops... Falling out right Along with the loot, is an old poloroid picture that I somehow missed seeing initially because it was tucked in one of the pockets - the pic is of my cousin and great-gramma (both are deseased now for a long while, so actually got me to 'catch a little somethin in my eye or somethin' if you know what I mean guys ;-) .. I sorta remembered now a bit- This was my cousins collection that his mom must have givin To my mom for me after he passed.. Grams used to bring us all her shiny coins, and We would play with em and then just toss em in my cousins box when we were done... I really didnt remember this till I seen that pic..
So anyways, I ended up tellin another little white lie to them (wife got the truth on the ride home ha) - but I let her know just how very much I loved these coins when I was just a lad who traded coins for smiles to grams, and how very special they are to me now as an Adult - I didnt have the heart to reveal the ' I was right all along, these really aren't really mine' card .. But it all turned out and ended the day on a good note!! (BTW not anticipated, but MEGA Brownie points scored with the wife over the actuality of this all!! ). :-)

So now I'm here with you guys!
I AM KENNY - I AM COINED- I AM COIN KENNY!! :-))

My plans for this? Well not to ruin the sentiment of it all, but I'm on a coin forum here now so that I can learn about what all I have here... and so I don't end up getting jipped in my attempts at selling these all off to someone that can appreciate them more than I can!! Not that I'm against coins or anything, I'm just not really in need of these and plus my wife said if I take on any more time consuming hobbies, that my brownie point bank is gonna take some big hits pretty soon! :-))

(PS.. Super-long forum introduction writing is NOT one of these said 'time consuming hobbies' .. I really have no idea why I wrote all this instead of just a simple 'Hey I'm Kenny and I'm new here!')
Sorry again for that if you're still in fact readin this ugggg lol
I am looking forward tho to meetin yall and learnin some cool stuff bout all this!! Thanks again for havin me!
Kenny

Great story Kenny, and welcome to CCF!

Best help I can offer right off the start is do not try any cleaning of your coins.

Hey all!! Thanks for the replies, warm welcome, and tips about cleanin em off (Bm0)!! And sorry if I upset anyone with my aLLcaps :-/ I truly didn't know that the caps were considered to be yellin and shoutin at people through the Internet!! Sorry again :-/
But hey.. I Already learned a few new things just from bein on here so far, so I'm all good with it! :-)

I'm only just a few days into coining now because of my circumstance, but I've run into a few concerning issues that are bein a bit tricky for me to navigate around...

The first one (and most concerning), is that now, anywhere I have been going lately - if ever I am in the same room as any spare change laying around, (could be mine or anyone else's for that matter), I can't help myself from checkin years and mints on every loose coin I can get my hands on!! (I'm not pocketing it or anything lame like that, but I think I'm becoming a coin addict or something!! Wth!!? Does anyone else do this on here? (I'm dead serious ugg lol)

2nd problem is that sometimes I'll read somewhere that a specific coin is gonna be worth $50, $1000, $12000, etc.. So then sometimes, I might happen to find that coin in my little box I have here - so I get all hyped and start hittin up Google, and my stomach drops with excitement.... Until I read on the top coinTrack site that my prospect is only worth face value... Then I'm all sad for a bit before I can finally build up the nerve again to break out my newly purchased CVS magnify glass and begin my search again Uggg lol ... Dead serious here too

So, I'm sure one day, I'll figure out a reliable system and a 'goTo' method/site/or magazine,, but I'd be curious to hear any of your guys' methods for doing similar to what I'm doing here!!

Thanks again for everything!! I'm def diggin it here so far! :-)

Hi Kenny .... Fellow Illinoian here and close to your neck of the woods ..... I fish for steelhead at Waukegan ....

Anyways with your coins first thing is to separate them into their respective groups .... The flying eagle would go into your Indian head and small group and keep the Wheat Cemts separate from the flying eagle and Indians ..... The early large cents into a group and so on ......

The grading part will be a little tougher but there is online grade guide like PCGS Photograde - do an online search and you'll find the link and compare your coins to the examples ..... Match them up to the grade and check their prices online as well search for PCGS Coin Prices and you should find the link .....

Know one thing .... PCGS is the "king" of coin grading and pricing so you will be using the best industry standards but on the prices you see, those are retail .... Don't expect to get those prices shown but at least you have an idea if it's a $5 coin or a $500 or gosh bless a $50k coin .....

Then visit a local show in our area .... There is one is coming Sunday and one almost every weekend around Chicago like Palatine and Tinley Park and many others .... Search the web and you'll find .....

Need help just ask ..... There are plenty of folks that will help!

Wow! localCoinGuy! Thanks man!! Holy smokes,, Waukegan?! Yep, right around the corner, I'm in lake villa (just west of gurnee)! Small world!
Where is the coin show at and what time does it start? (If you happen to know?) -
Honestly, I think the only one who's become a tad more crazier than me about sifting through all this coinage and trying to find those gems - is my wife - lol and I know she'd be totally down to get out to that show with me if there's gonna be one this close!!
Thanks bud for the tips also! I'm def gonna check into ALL of that when I get home from work tonight!!

Very cool, thanks LCG!
