I found a 1879-S Reverse 78 MS-65 PL from Global Coin Grading Service (GCGS). I know it's a crap company, however, I need to know what kind of value this coin carries.

By the looks of the coin I would ay $100+ based on lowballing the grade. Could be much more than that depending on the actual grade, and the variety.

In my experience, if these third world holders say a coin is PL, it does have a shot, but most of the time is not. If they call a coin DMPL you can almost expect it to be PL, but not always. Sometimes they are not, and sometimes they really all DMPL. Funny how these "grading services" work... You know what they say, "BUY THE COIN AND NOT THE HOLDER" ;)

If it's nota PL, is it still worth something?

I sold an 1879-S Rev. '78 that was AU-58 for about $125 not too long ago. I was basing my opinion on the fact that it is hard to grade your coin with the photos. A PL designation would surely add some value to the coin assuming it grades. From here it looks like it could make MS, but not too sure of the PL designation. MS coins of this nature would surely fetch a bit over $100, but it really just depends on where you sell it. I'd focus more on the variety at this point ;)

I have not picked up a whole lot of these, but from my experience alone it seems like the VAM-9 is one of the most common, and I've also found a few VAM-4s. I would guess that some of the photos on each page are from me a while back because I enjoy photographing the varieties I find.. Good luck attributing your coin! Let us know what VAM you find that it is, or if you need assistance ;)
