So I came across a 1991 Quarter today that appears to be clipped on alternating sides. I have read on this site about the Blakesley effect, so I thought that was a good sign.

The edges of the clip feel very blunt or sharp. I do not see a flowing or elongating. Any of your thoughts or comments would be appreciated.

are the clips curved or straight? they both look straight to me. Makes me think it happened post-mint but I don't really know that much about errors.

Both are straight. One is so straight it can stand on its end.

I know there are incomplete planchets that were cut too close to the edge of the sheet but I can't imagine how it could happen twice on the same one.

It could happen. Any chance we can see a bigger scan of the reverse?

No need. It's altered. The rims don't come to a shallow end as would be the case with a genuine clip. That plus it's impossible to get a straight clip on two sides of the coin. A straight clip happens because the blank was cut too close to the edge of a metal sheet.

So theoretically (but highly unlikely) it would be possible to have 2 straight clips if they were exactly 90 degrees apart and the planchet was cut too close to a corner of the sheet. Correct?

That is correct. The one with the doubled straight clips from the corner piece of the material would be the rarest ones.

Thanks everyone for your responses.

The consensus seems to be that it is an altered coin. It came out of a bank roll while I was looking fr the Kentucky State Quarter. It is the only one I am missing to catch up both of my daughters sets.

Yes I started late and I am using circulated coins to fill it. My daughters are both under 3 and I thought it would be a good starter set to give them when they are old enough.

I thought I found my first error
Wishful thinking on my part, but deep down I did not think it was a real clip error. Just seemed to sharp of an edge....

Bobby - Incorrect. And here's why...

The sides of the strips are straight. The ends of the strips are ragged. You could get a straight and ragged clip 90 degrees off, but two straight clips don't happen.

Now I've seen up to four curved clips on one coin, but relative to straight and ragged clips, curved clips are extremely common.
